Babies: 3 - 6 Months

What am I doing wrong? (another sleep ?)

Yet another sleep post... sorry.  Embarrassed

I know it's too early for sleep training, and I know there are mommas out there who have it much worse than I do, but I can't help thinking that there is something I'm doing wrong that is keeping DD from sleeping better.

She is a pretty good napper - I go from watching the clock for optimal awake time to watching for her cues to get her down - and she will usually nap from 45 min to 2 hours (and I can put her down awake).

She does NOT like the swaddle - she will scream and grunt until she gets out of it - and has been like that since about 7 weeks.

We had about 2 weeks where she was on an ok schedule - down at 7/7:30, up for a "dreamfeed" at 10:30 and right back to sleep until 3 or 4, then back down until 7 or 8.  During that time she would occasionally drop the 10:30 or the 3a feeding, so we've had the occasional 7 or 8 hour stretch.  However, she has completely lost all semblance of a schedule and is now completely unpredictable, except for the fact that I can count on her being up every 2 to 4 hours at night, if not sooner.

She has reflux, so I'm wondering if maybe we need to up her dose of Zantac? (I've read it's very weight sensitive, and she is a chunker.)  She currently sleeps in her bouncy seat (which is almost identical in shape to the RnP - we had both and returned the RnP b/c she can use the bouncy seat longer) b/c of her reflux, but has napped in both the bassinet part of the PNP and her crib before (successfully).   So I guess our problem isn't going down (although that can definitely still be a problem, it's not as much of a problem), it's staying asleep.

Do you think my supply could be an issue? (she is EBF) Maybe she's not getting enough?  ANY and all suggestions are welcome - thankfully I am a SAHM, so I can survive on the lack of sleep (I get anywhere from 3-5 hours of broken up sleep a night), but I'm worried that the lack of a good long stretch for her is bad for her development.

If you read this far - THANK YOU!  Sorry to ramble...

  • She is still so young. It is still normal at her age to not have consistent sleeping patterns. My Hadley didn't fall into a good sleep pattern until she was about 5 months old. We didn't do any sleep training and she just naturally started sleeping 12 straight hours at night.

  • My daughter started sleeping very badly around the same time. I wish I could offer help... but instead I say " sorry and hope it gets better again soon".  We are starting to see some signs of improvement now.

  • She could be in her 3 month growth spurt.  DD seems to be.  No napping and constant eating yesterday.  Sad
I give up trying to get a ticker.  I have a DD that is 2.5 years old and is awesome.  Maybe I'll add a quote to distinguish myself.  Hmmm.  How about...

  • Sorry!!!  I have never had a great sleeper, but right around 3 months it went from bad/ok to terrible.  Growth spurt?  pre teething?  Who knows!?  Its still not back to bad/ok but has gotten better :O)  We use the RnP to sleep.  I am transitioning LO to the crib next week when I am off work!  Maybe the crib will help!?  Maybe LO needs to stretch out!?  Have you tried elevating the mattress? Good Luck!!

  • Oh and LO might need more food!  My LO increased his amount around the same time.  He was waking up every 1.5 hours and sucking down 4 ounces.  I now give him bigger bottles during the day!!

That's one thing I'm worried about - I EBF and only pump if I'm going to be gone for some reason, so I don't have a bottle as a part of her regular schedule.  I can't just increase her bottle, other than letting her nurse more (which I already do on-demand).

I would normally agree with you, but I'm almost positive we went through it about a week early - she was eating like every hour and a half non-stop for about 3 or 4 days.  She's not that bad this time, just wanting more at night.  (We already feed between 2-3 hours during the day).

  • Sorry!  Agree with pp, she is still very young and many babies still need to feed every few hours!  Maybe do your dreamfeed later?  Just a few more months and you can sleep train... hang in there!

  • Adding to what has been said about her being young for a pattern, she is also in a growth spurt age- My DS went nutso with eating around then and then calmed down a bit. She will eat more to bring up your supply so she can get the calories.

Is she crying and arching her back when she wakes? I would ask your pedi about upping her dose... some kids need it upped a lot, some don't (DS only had it upped once since he started it, and is probably way over the weight for his dose but we are weaning him soon). If not, it may be her spurt, or just adjusting her sleeping.

Do you have a nighttime routine for her? That helped us a bit.

  • DS started doing this around the same time as well.  He was in a pretty good pattern for a while, with one night feeding, and then all of a sudden he was up 2-3 times a night, eating like a mad man!  This went on for 2-3 weeks at least, and now he's tapering off (he's 17 weeks now) - just one feeding at night, and back to eating a relatively normal amount.  It must have been a growth spurt or something...
