If you delivered at Mercy Fairfield, which practice did you use. Were you pleased with your experience?
I'm quickly becoming more and more upset and nervous about my current practice and would like to examine my options of switching to someone else. Is it even possible to switch practices at 26 weeks?
I loved my old practice (Mt. Auburn OBGYN) but really would prefer to deliver at Mercy Fairfield this time around for convenience reasons. Christ is just too far from our house/family when we have a toddler to consider as well.
Re: Mercy Fairfield
I did with Noah, purely for convenience reasons since I work there. I went to Obstetric and Gynecology Associates Inc www.cincyobgyn.com When I was pregnant with Noah I was working full time, and since their office is across the parking lot from the hospital, it made it really easy to just walk across for appointments really quickly.
I switched just before I got pregnant with Levi. I didn't have any major complaints, they handled my care well (for both my pregnancy and my ectopic) but since it's such a huge practice, I think there are 11 doctors, I felt like I didn't get very personalized care...they didn't know me from anyone else. Also since I work at Mercy I also work side by side with all those OB's for some fertility testing and it gives you a whole new perspective, and that's not always good. There's a few in that practice I would recommend, and some I wouldn't...and since you could get any of them during delivery that's why I ended up switching.
I had no complaints with delivering at the hospital, but there aren't many other practices that go there, but I think Dr. Bowen does and I've heard really good things about him.
I have heard great things about Dr. Bowen who delivers there.
I also recently saw Dr. Kelly Cole at Seven Hills Women's Health and really liked her. She delivers there as well.
I am pretty sure you can switch now, although I don't know the logistics of it. I would definitely check into it if you are uncomfortable with your current practice.
Good luck!

Baby Sister is coming soon!
hav2run - Are you referring to Dr. Kelly Cole? Is she with Seven Hills? According to their website, she only has rights at Bethesda North and Ft. Hamilton. I love the potential office location, though.
I had forgotten about Dr. Bowen as well. I will definitely add him to my list of people to contact.
Unfortunately, I currently see Obstetrics & Gynecology Associates and have had one bad experience after another. DH's cousin delivered with them on Friday and had a hellious experience. It's enough to have me re-considering my options.

Yes..she does have privileges in the OR at MF. I have worked with her many times. I honestly am not sure about deliveries because I don't do OB anesthesia much anymore. Another bumpie called her office recently, and was told she does deliver at MF. I know Dr Bowen does too. Otherwise, the group you see is the big group who goes there. I would say 90% of deliveries are with one of their docs.
Are you interested in natural birth at all? Dr B is your guy if you are. He is a huge supporter of natural delivery, and his section rate is very low. Just an FYI.
Hmmm...I'll definitely have to call and check about Dr. Cole. Like I said, I love that the office location is right down the street from my house.
I'm not really interested in a natural birth. I loved my epi with Allie
I may end up with a c-section anyway. At my 20 week ultrasound, baby was breech. I have no idea as to her position now because that would require the doctor to actually touch me. That hasn't happened at either of my last two appointments. No fundal height measurements...nothing. My abdominals have also separated a significant amount (1.5-2 inches at this point) leaving a large gap and there was an initial discussion of surgery to fix them, but the doc hasn't been in the room long enough to discuss it at the last two appointments either.
My biggest obstacle in swithcing is that OGA had us pay in full up front. I'm not sure if I'll be able to get any of my (delivery) money back. We have craptastic insurance so we'd be out several thousand dollars if they won't refund the delivery fee and deductable (they made me pay the deductable although I had already met my deductable for the year but that's a different issue in itself). I just need to talk to both practices (old and potential new) and see what I'm dealing with.
I appreciate the suggestions

Whoa! Really? Isn't that the same as being held hostage by your doctor? I would raise 10 kinds of cain and demand your money back should you decide to go elsewhere. They cannot charge you for services not rendered. I honestly had no idea that they were doing that to their patients. Crazy train.

Not sure if this helps, I had to switch OB's due to our moving this pregnancy. I came into the new pregnancy around week 16.
Most OB's and insurance companies do a global billing where you get one cost for the entire prenatal care and delivery. My OB that I saw basically all my 1st trimester (with NT scan, initial confirmation of pregnancy with US and 1st trimester blood work) sent me my final bill this week. I owe $50 for two copays.
The new OB made me pay my initial copay and have me paying $70 a visit until delivery.
Again, not sure if this helps. Switching wasn't hard- I had to contact and get copies of my medical records and take it all with me to the new OB.
Good luck finding a group. I am with For Women Inc here, but want to be at Good Sam just in case I have the issues I did with C again.
Chiming in-- I had a consult w/ Dr.Bowen's office and they are great! My SIL used them for both of her deliveries and was very pleased. She liked him so much that she was willing to drive an hour to see him for all her appointments and to deliver so that has to be saying something.
As for switching, you can switch OB's at really any time in a pregnancy. It obviously might not be the wisest thing to do come 38 weeks or something like that but you should absolutely feel comfortable with the care you are getting and if you dont I would switch to where you will. I would tell your office that you would like a copy of your charts for your own records (most places shouldnt charge for the initial copy). I wouldnt let them know you are switching until the last possible minute that way in case you change your mind its not awkward-- also ask for an itemized copy of your payments and bills paid so far. The office/finance manager should be able to give that to you and I am pretty sure its illegal for them to keep your money even though they didnt do the delivery. It might be a little tricky but it will be worth it for more peace of mind-- GL!
I switched during both of my pregnancies--at 16 weeks with DS and at 35-36 weeks with DD. It was slightly harder to find a practice willing to take me with DD, but we were moving so I had no choice. Some were very honest and said it works out well for them since they don't have to do much of the legwork and then get to bill for the delivery. I will say that I found some practices that were willing to take on a new patient that late in the game were not the most reputable practices. There were plenty who understood that things happen and you sometimes need to switch, though.
I can't help with the billing side of things other than to say it was no issue when I switched with DD. When I switched with DS, on the other hand, the practice I was leaving were huge jerks about the whole thing. I had to get my insurance company involved as my advocate, and it took months for the practice to admit they owed me money. I just kept calling my insurance company and the practice until it all got sorted out. I hope things go more smoothly for you.
I am seeing Dr. Bowen this pregnancy and have been nothing but thrilled with them so far. He came very highly recommended. He is very supportive on natural which is why I switched, but is obviously supportive of whatever the mother wishes or needs for pregnancy or delivery. There are two doctors in the practice, Dr. Bowen and Dr. Wall, and we have been impressed by both. They deliver at BNorth or Mercy Fairfield. They do global billing, so bill for total care after delivery, so since you have already met your deductible that should be helpful. The number is 771-9100 or https://www.thebowencenter.com.
