So C has been waking up anywhere between 4:30 and 6 in the morning. I usually leave him because he'll either fall back asleep or sing/coo for awhile before he needs to eat. He rarely acts hungry before 5:30. Once he starts fussing or wakes back up a second time I send DH in to change him and bring him to me to nurse. (Fair trade-off since he then goes back to bed for an hour and I have to get up when C's done eating).
But the past few days when DH gets him he has a dirty diaper. I'm worried that he's pooping earlier...like if he wakes up at 4:30 and is fussing, then falls back asleep, maybe he woke up to poo and then went back to sleep. I feel like I should be checking his diapers at that time in case he's dirty.
But if I get up with him at 4:30 or 5 to change him and then try to put him back to bed, there's no way that will happen. He has no sign of diaper rash and he doesn't seem fussy other htan the normal fidgeting before falling back asleep.
Should I check on him/change him? The thought of him being dirty makes me feel like a horrible mom. But the thought of getting up for the day at 4:30 on a regular basis isn't appealing either.
Help!
Re: WWYD RE: early morning dirty diapers? (longish)
I personally change Kate but she is very prone to getting a rash if poop stays on her longer than like 10 minutes.
Maybe just start caking on diaper cream before bed to act as a barrier?
If you're not already, I'd just do a good application of cream with his last diaper of the night. We started doing this when DD started waking up with big diapers and it's staved off most of the diaper rash.
As long as he isn't super uncomfortable and he's putting himself back to sleep, I say stay with your routine. If you can tell it's been a blow-out, I'd change him, but otherwise enjoy another hour of sleep.
I was just going to say this. I'd cake on the diaper cream and probably wouldn't change him. If he starts getting any type of rash, then I'd change him.
I think D does this sometimes, too. He often poops early in the morning and I'm not sure when.
The two men in my life. Oh, and I have a husband too...
If I had to guess he probably wouldn't go back to sleep with poop in his diaper. Maybe just do a sniff check to make sure. That way you won't disturb him if you don't have to.
As pp said, if he's not prone to rash and has no trouble falling asleep with the poopy diaper, I would probably leave him, if it's only for an hour or so.
I wouldn't leave him if he was going to be in bed for another 3 hours or anything, but an hour or so is ok, IMO.
FWIW, Logan is a pansy and there is no chance he'd fall back to sleep if he had a crappy diaper!
This, I put a layer of Aquaphor on Lainey before bed just in case.
A has been pooping roughly 6 times a day for a week now (pedi isn't concerned). I have to change his diaper during his night feeding now, and sometimes again if he poops during the feeding. His bum is holding up right now, but I do end up putting cream on it if it has looked red at all during the day.
I wonder if this is just some change in the maturity of their intestines.
