Canon Users

I appreciate everyone's recommendations for the Canon Rebel. I've enjoyed using it for six months; however, I have one issue. The flash. It startles my little one, but if I use a setting without it (even with room lighting) my photos blur. My sister's Nikon allows you to physically hold down the flash, but the Canon doesn't. I've also noticed that when you're in the "modes" (such as Profile), it doesn't allow you to turn off the flash. Any advice?

  • You have to use manual settings to keep the flash off.  Try this...use the "AV" setting.  Dial your aperture wide open...meaning the smallest number possible, to let in the greatest amount of light possible for your lens.  The camera will set an appropriate shutter speed.  If the photo is blurry or dark, you need the flash for your lighting situation. Unfortunately, flash is a must indoors for most lighting situations.  If you are using the kit lens, the darn thing won't even auto focus without strong lighting.

You might also invest in a LightScoop ($25), which is a mirrored attachment that will deflect your flash upward, toward the ceiling.  A Speedlite is another option (although costly) that will allow you to point your flash upward or behind you, bouncing the flash off the ceiling or walls.  Both prevent direct flash in baby's eyes, red eye, and the harsh direct flash glare in photos.
