Breastpump?

Okay, so I wasn't sure I was going to be able to breastfeed, and with a baby who is seriously hungry ALL the time and having had a breast reduction a few years ago (and my milk never came in with Finn) I was certain it wouldn't work. We have been getting her on, although she pulls off pretty quickly, and so she has been having bottles for the past 2 days. Imagine my surprise when I woke up in the middle of the night with hard as rock boobs and milk. So, I think I will need to pump, and have no idea what pump to get. Should I rent a hospital grade one? Buy one? Any suggestions?

Re: Breastpump?

  • I would rent one from the hospital at first. They are stronger.  We rented one for the first month with Alec--I think it's around $36ish?  (could be wrong) and I think it may qualify for an HSA card if you have one.

  • yes rent a hospital grade pump first. I had to pump exclusively for Reese for the first month or so. It is so much more efficient.

  • Normally, I say to buy one, but if you aren't sure if this is going to work or not, then I would just rent a hospital one.  Kennestone charges $2 a day.  Not sure about others though.  The reason I say buy one is b/c I rented w/ Gavin, not sure if it would work out or not.  Ended up spending enough over 3 mos that I could have bought one.  If you end up buying one, I have been very pleased with my Ameda Purely Yours- much cheaper than the Medelas and I found it even more effective than the Ameda hospital pump that I used to rent!  Skip the Ultra- that just gets you the bag but costs way more $$$.

  • Andrea. I have breast pump that you can have. You just need to buy parts to try it.
  • I got the Lansinoh one and it works great.  It is pretty affordable.

  • Medela PISA.  I love mine, as do all my friends who have one.  I remember when I was registering at BRU and a husband was in there buying some other brand for his wife and the BRU manager who was helping me told me something along the lines of "the husbands always come in and try to save money getting one of the cheaper pumps, but they are always back a week or two later to buy the Medela anyway" because nothing works as well.

  • Yay for being able to nurse after a reduction.  I was surprised myself that I could produce.  I used the rental hospital pump ($70/month from Piedmont) and it worked pretty well.  Not really portable though.  Just a PSA, this site is a good resource for post reduction moms and the ladies on it are super supportive.  www.bfar.org

  • I rented a Hygeia from Lactation Consultants of Atlanta in December, I think, and really liked it.  I mostly was trying to see if my pump might have been dying bc I got the pump from SIL and wasn't 100% sure.  I really liked it, and liked them. I think it was maybe $40 for a month?

  • Babies R Us also rents hospital grade pumps.

If/when you buy please please please invest in a good one. Nothing on this earth is more valuable to me than my Medela PSA. It has kept my suply up for 11 months of exclusive pumping.
