Food Sensitivity Check In

his check in is for mamas who have had to restrict their diet due to food sensitivities in their LOs or themselves.

The theme for this week is anything goes. I hate to cop out again this week but I'm sick with a cold & need to get Ari down for a nap. I think I'll nap with him!
Any random tips, vents, etc. are also welcome.

Re: Food Sensitivity Check In

  • We had to pull coconut milk. Well, for Ari anyway. After several weeks it seemed to be making his reflux act up. His reflux has been nearly non-existent for months. He's okay if I'm drinking it. I guess because it's such a low level reaction & he's only nursing once a day now. Or maybe it just clears out of my milk really fast - who knows. So Ari is back on rice milk for now.

  • We're just trucking away, no changes or developments. I want to challenge milk (I know it makes NO sense that he reacts to everything else and might be ok with milk, but it's the one thing I've never challenged, and he's fine when I have goat's milk, so I'm going to give it a whirl), but I have to wait until this bout with teething is over. He's acting tired and grumpy today, and he has "sick eyes" that hopefully don't develop into more.

  • I'm going to try DD on coconut milk soon.  I hope to be able to give her a little coconut ice cream on her birthday if she does okay with it.  I usually feed her really healthy, so I want to give her a little treat on her big day.

  • Not much to say here - I had some mozzarella last week and lo seemed to get really congested that night so I haven't had more. I do plan to try this recipe as soon as I have the time. https://www.godairyfree.org/201104104953/News/Nutrition-Headlines/Boston-Cream-Pie-Waffles-with-Dairy-Free-Pastry-Cream-and-Homemade-Chocolate-Sauce.html

  • Joining you... have been off dairy for 4 days.. not actively cutting out soy, but I am not sure I ate a lot of it in the first place. So far I have discovered almond milk and honey nut cheerios is nice, and that the chocolate almond milk is okay. I miss real chocolate already though...

No idea how it is working, since it is so early. (Plus half the pumped milk he had yesterday was before we did anything.)

I am happy that I have some milk in storage, so that when the time comes I can challenge without reintroducing it to my diet.

I am sure I will be looking for suggestions soon, since as my DH pointed out, almost everything we eat regularly has some form of dairy in it. (I ate at a Mexican restaurant on Sat... I had ribs and chicken...)

You'd be surprised how many things have soy. I really recommend cutting ALL dairy and soy, even hidden (which is really overwhelming at first) for a couple weeks so you can get both of your systems cleared, and then you can try small quantities and see how he does. Good luck!

Get some Enjoy Life chocolate!  I get the chocolate chips and munch on them when I'm craving chocolate.  They're really pretty good!

Is there a good resource for this like Kellymom has for dairy? I have been reading labels to find hidden dairy, so if there is soy info on the label I tend to shy away. And I did switch to almond milk, not soy milk.

So new to this... and of course my family doc (pedi) doesn't even believe in foremilk/ hindmilk imbalances, or that his gas is anything but not being burped enough... so it isn't even worth talking to him about diet changes.

  • my rant - i got a vegan veggie roll (sans tamari sauce) after I specifically asked whether it was soy free without the sauce - yes, says the chef.  great.  i sit down, scarfed down half of it before i looked down at my plate to see a huge hunk of tofu sticking out the other half.  ugh.  affected my LO for 2 days.  lesson learned - regardless of what anyone says, I still need to use my eyes and LOOK at what i'm eating!

Trader Joe's (if there's one near you) also has amazing chocolate that is dairy and soy free.  It's the dark chocolate bars that are TJ's branded - check the label to be sure you're getting the right ones.  I love the orange-label ones (with truffle).

if you google "hidden soy", you'll find a ton of lists, like this one.   note that i (and a few others here) also avoid vegetable oil (soybean oil), since it seems to bother my LO.  I too, recommend cutting out ALL hidden dairy and soy until your systems are cleared, then figuring out what your LO can tolerate.

our pedi was absolutely no help either.  it seems overwhelming, but you'll figure it out!  and if you have more questions, ask away Smile
