On my 39 week doctor visit I was told I had some high blood pressure issues and my doctor told me to come back that Thursday (March 31st) to get my blood pressure checked again. I got up and dressed for work that morning and made my way to the doctors office first thing to get it out of the way. Sure enough, my blood pressure still read high and my doctor came in to tell me she would like for me to go to the hospital for lab work and for Rawley's heart rate to be monitored and to expect to be there for a few hours. As I left the doctor's office an overwhelming sense of fear came over me and I immediately called Ryan to let him know I needed to be on my way. I couldn't stop crying, maybe because I knew this was really going to happen and also that I was a tad scared because I have never been to the hospital before - I had no idea what to expect. Ryan left work and told me to meet him at the house so we can pack up the car with all our stuff...just in case. I made myself a bowl of oatmeal since I hadn't eaten yet at this point and off we went!
Around 10:30am we arrived and they wheeled me on upstairs to Labor & Delivery. I had changed into my hospital gown and got into the bed where they immediately took my blood pressure and a bunch of blood work and hooked me up to the monitors to keep an eye out on Rawley. Surprisingly enough, my blood pressure went back to normal and all my vitals came back perfect, but they didn't feel comfortable with Rawley's heartbeat. It was normal, but it wasn't getting excited which they said they wanted to see. Since they thought I was hungry they had me eat some lunch and waited a bit to see if it got better. After the nurses talked to the doctor, they all thought it was best I stay at the hospital and wait to get induced. I was finally moved to another Labor & Delivery room where I was going to stay until our son was born.
As we arrived, they decided to hook me back up to all the monitors and give me an IV and advised that I will need to be administered Cervidil because my cervix was not soft enough and in order to induce labor with Pitocin they needed it to be soft so it would actually work like Pitocin was supposed to - I was still dilated at 1cm. This Cervidil dose was to last 12 hours and during this time I could not eat and we had to sit and wait until the next morning before we knew if anything had progressed. Ryan and I passed the day by watching TV and Uncle Colin came by to visit as well to help keep us company.
We woke up the next morning to find out that my cervix had not soften liked they wanted and I was to be administered ANOTHER 12 hour dose of Cervidil. I was finally able to eat breakfast (aka, my last meal) before they gave me another dose - I was also still dilated at 1 cm.
We passed yet another day by welcoming visitors and joking around with all the nurses, but still frustrated that this was happening. Finally around 5pm I started to feel the contractions I was having all day and boy did I feel them! They were off the charts and they started to come around every few minutes and would last a few minutes. I have honestly never felt so much pain. While still being at 1cm, I told the nurses that I wanted an epidural...STAT!
Around 6:30pm the most glorious man I have ever seen (Dr. Ross the anesthesiologist) came in ready to administer the best thing that had ever happened to me that day...my epidural! I was always scared of getting this done in fear that my body wouldn't take this medicine or I would have a reaction to it somehow. At that point I didn't even care. I grabbed my pillow, relaxed my shoulders and off he went. It didn't really hurt as bad as I thought it would, but during this time I was having mad contractions so it felt very uncomfortable. Within maybe 15 minutes I was able to feel some sort of relief and felt a million times better. They had me just kick back and relax and gave me an oxygen mask to give Rawley better oxygen along with a catheter since I wouldn't be allowed to get up while I had my epidural. Right after that frenzy Uncle Colin and Rawley's cousins came to visit us again and during this time I had felt like the catheter wasn't working. I had felt like was peeing the bed and had immediately told the nurse. She told me my water just broke...on my own without the Pitocin. The nurse checked me and I had also completely dilated to 10 cm within 1 hour!!!!! The nurses took out my Cervidil and told us that I was ready to push!
Once we were told we were ready to go, a patient came in that required an emergency C-Section so we had to sit there and wait. Either way, they wanted Rawley to descend more so it didn't matter to much that we weren't immediately pushing...I had my epidural so I was all good. The nurses had gotten the room ready while we relaxed and got ready. Starting at 9:45pm I was able to begin pushing.
This whole process was not what I expected it to be, it was fairly easy and painless but a lot of pressure. I ended up pushing for a fairly long time and finally after almost 3 hours the doctor had to use a vaccum to get little Rawley outta there which happened to be the worst part of this whole process. Probably the worst pain I have ever felt in my life as the doctor (not my regular OBGYN and actually the one I didn't want to deliver me) basically yanked Rawley out. Finally at 1:44am, Rawley James was born weighing in at 7 pounds, 14 ounces and 21 inches long - my exact same measurements when I was born and an hour and 44 minutes after my 31st birthday!
I could not believe I just gave birth to our beautiful little boy! Looking at him was the most amazing thing I have ever laid my eyes on. He was so cute, snuggly and amazingly calm. He was always such a good boy during my pregnancy and he was on his birthday too. Apparantely I made him a good home because he was just very stubborn on coming out. Now our family of three has turned into a family of four and I am loving being a first time mommy. I couldn't have asked for a better miracle in my life.

No pitocin at all, I couldn't believe it! I wasted 24 hours just waiting to able to have it and ending up not even needing it. It was so crazy
