Iron Supplement?

I currently have iron included in my prenatal vitamin, but when I had some of my last bloodwork come in, my iron was a bit low and the doctor's office recommended a supplement.  Does anyone currently take an iron supplement? If so, which one are you taking?

Re: Iron Supplement?

  • Hi,

I have been taking Iron supplement prescribed by my doc since 7month of being pregnant and my Doc said that I should keep taking it after the birth of my son.

I am taking Vitron C (ferronyl ironand ascorbic acid)

Its a high potency Iron Dietry supplement.

  • I also had to add on a supplement when I was right around where you are... My OB specifically asked that I take Slow FE, which is a slow release iron supplement.  The "slow release" component of it means that it supposedly has less ill effect on your GI system as compared to an immediate release supplement.  I wouldn't know either way, b/c when I bought mine, the pharmacist also told me to begin taking a fiber supplement (just regular old Metamucil capsules) along w/it, so that's what I did.  I was taking a fistful of vitamins and supplements by the end of pregnancy. • I took the regular Fe tabs.  (I had to ask the pharmacist because it wasn't in the "I" section.  I felt so dumb!)  I also took a stool softener daily.

  • I took Megafoods blood builder. I can't say enough great things about it. It's cheap, natural, won't upset your stomach or cause constipation (actually it made me go more) and it sent my iron high, it was low when first tested and then next time it was high enough that the midwife asked me what I was using. It also has other natural ingredients that increase absorption like B and C vitamins. Between that and making sure I was getting enough magnesium (sadly prenatal vitamins are lacking in the correct amounts of that too) I never needed to take a stool softener, fiber or never had constipation issues. I was borderline anemic, so I was impressed it raised my iron levels so well. I was anemic with my first pregnancy so I made sure to take care of it earlier in my pregnancy the second time.

  • I took Slow FE also.  It did not cause constipation, in fact it cause the opposite problem.

you can get it at any natural market, probably whole foods, but I ordered mine online through Amazon. It's through Vitamin Shoppe and the shipping is only .99 cents, cheaper then shipping through Vitamin Shoppe directly.

  • Thank you, everyone! I need to get on the supplement asap, since I was hoping to control it via diet, but that wasn't going to happen! @Photonut- the natural option sounds intriguing too - I'm going to look into that as well.
