stitches itching like crazy! (maybe tmi)

So I only had 2 stitches, so I know I'm not nearly as bad off as some of you girls, but they itch like a SOB!  I can't tell if they are healing or realy even where they are.  But I know either the stitches or just my hair growing back is itching and making me incredibly uncomfortable!  If you had stitches, when did they heal by?  Has anyone tried to shave down there yet?  I desperately need to and want to, but I'm afraid to tear something, or get the razor caught on something.  I can't wait 6 weeks till my dr's appt. either!!!  What do you suggest?

  • i had a 2nd degree tear.  no idea how many stitches.  i never looked down there until right before my 4 week checkup. that's when i decided to try shaving some. at least clean up around the bikini line.  the itching had greatly subsided by like week 3 but i didn't feel totally better until that last stitch was gone, a couple days after my 4 week appointment.

good luck to you!! warm water in the peri bottle really helped the itching.  and i've heard lots of people recommend sitz baths...a lot of them.

  • I have no idea how many stitches i have but yes they ITCH LIKE CRAZY. i just kinda grin and bear it though and I've shaved, i started shaving day5 because i was less sore and tender down there,  it helped alot with the itching.

  • My hospital gave me some numbing spray that really helped with that.  Did you get anything like that?

  • My midwife suggested sitz baths and using the peri bottle as often as possible to help keep the area moist and help the stitches dissolve. I found the peri bottle helped to keep the itching at least manageable.

  • The peri bottle has been really helpful for this... and Tucks pads, also. The active ingredient in Tucks pads is witch hazel, so I put a few drops of witch hazel in my peri bottle with warm water and that helps a lot.

I'm 3.5 weeks out and still having a lot of itching and discomfort down there, but it is getting better. I had a partial 3rd degree tear. I had no idea how painful the recovery process would be!

  • Same problem here, with more stitches. My dr said it's a normal part of the healing process and suggested using benadryl cream if it's really bad but the Tucks pads have been enough. I just put one on top of my pad (still bleeding a little) and it keeps things comfy. I also may dig out the dermoplast again if it gets worse. And definitely keep using your peri bottle.
