RP: Baby awake at night/ Sleeping during day

Hi all,  LO is almost 4 weeks old and I'm finding that during the day she sleeps so easily, but at night it's a whole other story. Around her last feeding before bed, I bring her upstairs (usually between 10-11:30) and BF her. After that, she seems wide awake, even though we're in the bedroom, lights are off, sound machine on,etc. I sometimes have to wake her to feed her that last feeding when I'm going to bed, and I'm wondering if at that point I should just let her sleep rather than waking her up to feed. I also try to get her to sleep with BF, but at that time, it's not working. Last night, she literally sat in her RNP for over an hour+ just eyes wide open and making sounds, not even close to sleeping. Luckily, she wasn't hysterically crying, but still would not go to sleep. I tried rocking her in the RNP, but eventually I was falling asleep myself! I also resorted to a pacifier, which helped her close her eyes, but then the second it fell out, she would be wide awake and crying. Then it happened again at her 5 AM feeding, when she stayed up forever! Any tips? Right now, she's in our room in the RNP. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! XOXO

Re: RP: Baby awake at night/ Sleeping during day

  • At two weeks they're still figuring out night/day - what I did was whenever I fed Dayne at night I kept it as dark as possible, I didn't speak to him, didn't turn the TV on, kept it very quiet.  I made it as boring as possible.

During the day I opened all the shades, didn't keep it quiet even when he was napping, kept him very entertained.  I made it as active as I could.

He figured out the difference around week three.

  • i often have the same problem! when DD was inside baby, she was active at night too. anyway, sometimes she just wont settle down at night, she just wiggles and looks around, cooing.

  • I've been following the eat, play, sleep routine since day 1 with Landon, and he's never confused day and night. It's recommended in Babywise and Baby Whisperer.
