Stork Yard Signs

The giant ones.

think you are going the have one? Pretty sure my MIL has already purchased one because she mentioned going to the party store across town the other day and I know thats who sells them.

Funny thing is my neighbors don't even know I'm pregnant since I've been on lock down so long...Surprise. lol

I always thought they were so cute until the news recommended not to get them because you never know what crazies are out there wanting to steal a baby. BUT I think I'll let MIL get her happiness from it. We live in a quiet neighborhood on the last street so it really doesn't get much traffic passing by anyways..

This exactly.  I always thought I wanted one until I read literature from my hospital talking about security during and after your hospital stay and they mentioned this.  Guess there will be no stork for me.

  • Ohhh I bet it reaps good things for you. If I saw that one of my neighbors was having a baby, I'd be so likely to pop by with food and/or baby gifts.  But I live in a condo in the city so unlikely to happen to or around me!
  • I'm on the no stork side. I feel like depending on when it is put out in your yard people will know you are probably still at the hospital OR that you  might be home alone with a new baby which, even if they aren't trying to steal your baby, it makes you more vulnerable.

  • I think I'll make DH take it down after a day or two of being home. Food is good ;)

My neighbors really are pretty great.

ETA: I'm pretty sure MIL wouldn't even prop it up there until the day we leave the hospital and I figure those two days after we'll all be home. Heck I think my Mom might stay for a week if I decide for her to.

  • My MW and hospital made such a big deal about not making it obvious you have a newborn in the house that they scared the crap out if me when I had DS. So our Frieda went all out inside the house! Lol! People are nuts and it's sad to think you have to actually be afraid of announcing the birth of your child! Urg!

You know, I thought maybe it was a regional thing. When I lived in Florida I never saw them. Then we moved to Texas and I've seen quite a few. DH's family always does them..

  • I have seen them in store, but have never seen one in anyone's yard.  I have seen the smaller "it's a ____" signs in yards marking which house the baby shower was at, though.  I hadn't thought of using them one way or another, and my MW hasn't said anything about it.  I wouldn't have a problem using one if someone else bought it, but that's probably because MH and I are the only non-retired ppeople on our block and our neighbors know of EVERY coming and going.  It's like having watch dogs that can call the police....

I just sure as heck hope she knows better than to put her name on it or DH is ripping it out as soon as we take a picture!

  • We have a sign from my baby shower that I'm going to change to hang on the door to say that baby girl is here.  I figure that way it's not visible from the street.
  • My mom bought us one of those yard signs on a stick, she said that instead of putting it in our yard, she was going to cut the stick off and when the baby is born, put the info on it, and  DH can put it on his office door... I thought that was a nice alternative.

I'm so paranoid about this that I cut up our stroller, swing anf crib boxes into pieces small enough to bad before taking them out to the trash instead of putting the boxes on display next to the trash can.

  • We won't have a stork sign, but I fly small seasonal flags (I think this is a southern thing, too), and my mom bought a cute, "It's a Boy!" flag.

I'm not worried.  Between my mom and his, we'll have people there with me for awhile when we first get home.  And we won't leave it up too long.   I see them all the time around here.

Indifferent HOLY MOLY! That's huge! haha..i was thinking of what we got, its just a poster sized sign with a stick attached...well, ignore my prior comment! haha, can't really stick that on an office door

  • lol

Our house is in a cul de sac and a new community of 6 houses. Our neighbors are all safe but I don't know about the other passer-byers. I'd be too paranoid too!

  • Thank you for posting this! I had not even realized all the issues putting a sign in the yard for the baby could cause.
  • My family is under strict instructions to do nothing of the kind at my house. Here it's usually bow and balloons on mailboxes. They've been told anything put up will be promptly removed. This will be one of DH's jobs, yard and mailbox patrol.
  • My parents really want to do one so they will put one up in there yard. My LO wont stay there so it still is annoucing it but it wont be in my yard.

  • I've not seen any out here in ND but back in PA you would occasionally see stuff like this in yards.  You can rent them.  It never occurred to me to be worried about wackos preying on new moms... sad.

  • I've never seen the signs, but I remember people putting a blue or pink ribbon on their door.

  • Hmmm never seen a stork sign here in NY but balloons on the mailbox are pretty popular. I  never would have thought of people preying on new moms and babies, that is so scary!

I'm not a fan of them...I just don't like them.    We plan on doing what we did for DS.   I had a couple "It's a boy" signs in the front window.   Then we tied blue balloons to the stair railings.     That was it.

  • I'm late to pipe in, but I think stork signs in the yard are fun. I had one for my first baby and I plan to rent one for the baby I'll have in December.  My MIL has mentioned (several times) about the possiblity of wackos and she can be relentless when she wants to. So, after a few weeks of it, we handed her the phone and called the center for missing and exploited children to ask how many babies had been kidnapped because of a sign. they told her they knew of none. I don't think renting a stork is any more careless than showing a baby bump in public, a visible car seat in a back window, a stroller on the porch or taking a baby for a stroll, etc. Lots of every day things point to a new baby or older children in the house. I've read of a couple of cases where a woman - home alone - opened the door and allowed another woman in the house who either killed her or tried to kill her to take her baby in utero. Who in their right mind allows a stranger in the house, especially when they are home alone?  I don't know, maybe I'm all wet, but I don't think a stork screams new baby any more than all the other obvious things people see.  Just my two cents worth. i'm sure I'll be slammed for my opinion by some of you. I'm new to this forum and mostly I've lurked until today, but I know it gets ugly around here sometimes. That's too bad and only discourages people from posting.

You're going to have to try a bit harder than that if you're wanting to stir up some drama, darling. We're a pretty mellow bunch around here.

So, OP, did you wind up with your stork sign?? Wink

  • Thanks Erin!  I guess that sounded worse than I meant for it to, but I saw some not-so-nice posts as I was reading ...so i guess I was steeling myself. Smile To answer your question, no...not yet...I'm due near Christmas...but here's a photo of the one I saw down the street and really liked. Of course, it might be blue. I don't know what I'm having. I think it's more fun that way.  Well, I tried...don't know how to do it.
