How much is too much?

to give a pacifier?  We just started giving our 4 week old a pacifier at night and gradually more and more during the day.  Is there a guideline on how much is too much for a binky?

Re: How much is too much?

  • I don't know that there is a guideline - but there is some research that suggest pacifier use reduces the risk of SIDS.  I would only give it though if thats what they really want.  Its very difficult to break the habit as they get older.

  • According to my pediatrician, some babies have a stronger need to suck to self soothe.  I use the pacifier a lot because is keeps my little man happy.  It doesn't work if he's hungry or has some other problem, so it's not like I'm ignoring his needs!

  • Our pediatrician said the first 3 mths give it whenever the DC wants it, the bad habits/problems are established between mths 4-6.
