Babies: 0 - 3 Months

I broke several cardinal rules this weekend.

I slathered E head to toe in sunscreen, let her drink water, and skipped two naps. She's still alive and was smiling this morning so I think she'll make it.

I talked to the pedi about the sunscreen and water so all the Mommy McJudgersons that walked by glaring at me got flipped off.

JK I just mooned them. That was a difficult feat while holding a bottle or water in my infant's mouth while she was slippery from sunscreen.

I thought it would be a struggle to get her to drink any but she seemed to love it.

  • Gosh, once she can walk, you can REALLY slather her up and chase her around like a greased piggy.  That sounds like a blast!

Same with our LO! I was thinking ohhh she won't like it as much as the boob! And then next thing I know it's gone!

  • A little water is okay, its when people water down formula too much or give straight bottles of water all the time that causes the kidneys to shut down and literally, will kill a baby. There are many people who can't afford formula who think its okay to water down the powder more than the recommended that really cause problems for their kids: https://www.heraldtribune.com/article/20081202/BREAKING/812020279
  • Ahem....I assume DH took pics, where are they?
  • What kind of sunscreen did you use? We will be taking Molls in the pool soon and I want to make sure she's coated.

    Sounds like a wonderful weekend.

I know you're referring to my naked ass but those are in the private collection. Here is E about to leave for the zoo!

We used Waterbabies Pure and Natural? It was Pure and something. 50 SPF. It's an oil free, perfume free, tearless formula.

  • Not judging, just question.  I'm the person that, heaven-forbid, eyeballs the 1/2 scoop of formula for a 5 oz bottle... Why did you start adding water to her diet?

I don't normally. We were going to the zoo and it was 85 degrees out. We were told to give her a few ounces of water to keep her hydrated between meals because it was so hot and she was sweating.

  • Thanks!  Makes sense.  It's getting really hot here too, and may do that if we're outside in the heat.  Poor thing was roasting in her car seat on Saturday.  We ended up turning on the a/c at home.

The no sunscreen is just cause it's full of chemicals, and it's nice to avoid those for baby for as long as possible.

the no water is because babies will suck down too many ounces of it--most babies do like water, and will drink way more than they need, you'll think they must be thirsty and offer more, and then they take in too much and get really sick from it. Plain water messes up a baby's electrolytes if they drink too much, and too much for a 0-3 month old baby may be as little as 1/2-1oz of plain water.

Even here in AZ where it gets 115 degrees, it's not recommended to give young babies water.  If this were the 6-9 month, or 9-12 month board, it wouldn't be such a big deal, but here on the 0-3 month board, no baby that age needs extra water even if they are sweating.  remember, their breastmilk or formula is primarily made of water, they get plenty of fluids to make sweat and not get dehydrated.

Thanks but I have a pediatrician and I trust his advice.

  • 85 degrees is hot? I would avoid ever coming to AZ, unless it's December (and even that's questionable) Stick out tongue

I plan to! Bahaha I can't tolerate heat. I was in a tank and still pouring sweat. Poor E was all soggy the whole time we were out too. She's def a winter baby.

Um, actually, DS gets an extra ounce of water in EVERY bottle and he's thriving. His pedi and I talked it over, and since it prevents his constipation and the apparent colic he had, it's a win. Been doing this for nearly a month now... and I'm pretty sure the kid ain't dead.

So a sunburn is a better option in your opinion? Good call. I'm surprised you didn't start going off on her that should should have just breastfed her instead and should ditch bottles altogether. That's more par for the course for you.

FYI- there are safer sunscreens out there. Given that you apparently know everything, how did you miss that bit of information?

Well according to the AAP we are supposed to keep young babies out of the sun completely, or cover them in lightweight clothing/blankie/long sleeves and pants.

since that is virtually impossible in some instances, you just have to do your best to weigh chemical overload in varying sunscreens to choose the safest for your baby.

the barrier sunscreens are usually the safest for babies (think zinc oxide white type) because they are not absorbed as much by the skin.  other types may be ok in limited amounts, but the amount of chemicals vary widely.  some of the ones marketed to babies have horrible chemical loads that are absorbed by baby's sensitive skin.

    search your favorite sunscreen here

    https://www.ewg.org/2010sunscreen/

and see how it ranks for safety, whether it contains vitamin A(not recommended) or oxybenzone(may cause cancer) and whether the SPF listed on the bottle is exaggerated.   ideally you'd choose a sunscreen in the 0-2 range for babies for safety.

Are you always on such a high horse or is it just a bump thing?

Also the AAP says sunscreen in infants is fine in moderation.
