How to babyproof these stairs?

Forgive me if this is a stupid question...we currently live in a one story home, but we're moving next month. This is a photo from the house that we're looking at renting, but I'm not sure what type of baby gate we would need for these stairs. Would we be able to mount a permanent gate on that small banister pole? I'm sure we could use one of those spring mounted ones, but I'd rather have a gate-style if possible.

Any tips? Thanks! :)

  • I can't really tell how thick or thin that banister is in relation to a gate. We have a Summer Baby gate that is both tension and opens and closes. I would think that if the banister itself is too thin you could install a 2x4 to it and screw the gate to that.

  • Yeah, sorry it's a crappy photo. I forgot to take a pic myself, so this is from the realtor's website.

Good idea about the 2x4, though!

We have this Munchkin extender gate - got it at BRU and love it. It would mount easisly to the banister but I would find out if you can drill through it. If not then I would go with something like this instead.

  • the top of our steps is banister one side and wall the other. They make gates that have attachments to wrap around a banister and then pieces that screw into the wall for latching. See PIP below this is our steps. One shows a pretty good shot of what it looks like latching to the wall and the other shows the platic attachements that wrap around the banister. Got it at BRU!

  • We have the second pic that was posted a few posts up on our bannister and it works perfectly!

  • We have stairs like this - on One Step Ahead's website you can get a kit that allows you to not have to drill into the banister, and it creates a flat surface for a pressure mounted gate. It's just a 3" (or so) board that velcros to the bannister, and then on the wall side you just drill or pressure mount per the gate you buy.
