Do they run pretty true to size? TIA.

Re: Gap Maternity Tops

  • I've got quite a few Gap maternity tops.  Pre-pregnancy I'm a size 2 or a small and don't have much in the bra region :).  I'm 23 weeks now and have gained around 10 lbs so I'm around 130lbs now.

I like mediums in the Gap tee-shirts but a small in the sweaters.   So, I would say the tee-shirts run a little small and I'm always nervous about them shrinking, but the sweaters run pretty true to size.    But, I don't really like things to be super tight so I tend to go a size up.

  • I find they do. Large in maternity and regular.
  • I thought they ran a little big... at least for me. I usually buy a medium to account for some shrinkage, and I found all the maternity tops to be VERY long and loose in a medium size. I may be able to wear them towards the end when my bump is really big, but right now they just look like tents.

  • DH keeps telling me to order online since it's free shipping. I'm hoping to hit a Gap maternity today just to see the fit. My body figure is so foreign to me right now, I need to try things on.

  • I think so.
  • Well Gap and ON run bigger than other stores in general. Like my shirts there are usually a large, but other stores I would get an XL. So they do run true to size as far as the size you normally get at Gap, but if you're just saying when you get a shirt at a normal department store... then you could maybe get a size smaller.

I hope that made sense, reading it back it seems a little confusing.

  • My GAPs are my favorites - they look the best and feel the best. And they are true to size - until your bump gets to the ginormous stage. I'm a small before preg and small maternity shirts fit perfectly. But my bump just went through a crazy growth spurt so I ordered a medium to test it out and it's great. There's room for the bump to get its full growth, but it still drapes well. I can still wear my smalls, but I can see the writing on the wall.

I'd say that since you're moving towards your third tri, try your usual size and one size up - and remember that after you have the baby you'll be glad you have some maternity shirts to wear as you lose weight. Once I'm out of my small shirts completely, I know I'll be back in them in August after I have my baby!

Just a "warning" per se about their free shipping. Yes, it is free shipping (on orders over $50 usually) however, many of their maternity clothes online (or at least in my experience) can be returned by mail only. And with that, comes a $6 shipping charge if you use their return label or you can go to the post office and try to mail it back yourself using a cheaper rate. I also am one to try things on and had to return a shirt I bought via mail. Hopefully I returned it correctly because I haven't seen a credit yet.

  • You might want to call the Gap near you and confirm their return policy.  When I worked at the Gap, we took everything on return except Gap Outlet.  Even stuff we didn't carry in the store, like maternity, Gap Body, and online exclusives.
  • I think they do. It will also depend on how far along you are in your pregnancy, though. If you're normally a medium and order a medium, it probably won't fit you if you're not showing very much yet.

I've found that most maternity tops fit better closer to the end.

  • Unless you've gained or lost excessive weight, you should still be your same size.  I've only got a few of their stretchy material shirts, and while its fitted in my arms where I want it, there's plenty of room in the belly to grow.

ON on the other hand I find runs a little large, in both regular and mat clothes.
