So DH doesn't know it yet, but this is our daughter's name (he wants to wait til we see her; I think I can convince him that she looks like an Evangeline).
I'm pretty set on it in general, but I had some questions for those of you who know/have an Evangeline, or have seriously considered it.
1. How was it pronounced?
Seems like a dumb question, but the first person I met with this name pronounced it --lyn instead of --leen. Because DH doesn't care for many --leen/line names (though he loves the meaning of this one, and he thinks it's pretty), I've been considering the --lyn pronunciation.
2. Did/would she go by her full name, or a nickname?
I fully intend to insist on people calling her by her full name until she's old enough to decide what she wants to be called. Having grown up as a "just Allie, not Allison---A-L-L-I-E," the thought of correcting people on what to call my daughter really doesn't phase me at all. I do think that, while the name is pretty long, it doesn't have any really obvious nicknames; I do like Evy/Evie, but that's not necessarily intuitive from the name.
3. If she went by a nickname, what was it?
TIA!
ETA: 4. Whoops. And if you know it, what was her middle name?
I'm having the darndest time coming up with a middle name, but I hate middle name posts, so I didn't want to ask for suggestions. Our last name is very short, so I feel like one-syllable names are abrupt with it, but anything longer is a mouthful. So I'm just curious what Evangelines' middle names are.
Re: Do you know an Evangeline?
I actually think Evangeline Lily flows gorgeously, but that's the name of the actress from Lost....
The only Evangeline I know of is a costume shop. It's pronounced with the -leen ending. I actually LOVE the name, and think it pairs well with Faye as a MN.
Nobody around here shortens the name of the shop despite its long name. Are you looking for a NN or would you prefer to use her whole name?
I plan on using the whole name. I'm not a big fan of NNs in general.
I didn't know that. She's a 3 year old from my home town. Maybe her parents watched Lost, but I don't know. I never would have made that connection on my own. Weird.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this name and I am so sad DH wouldn't get on board. I fell in love with it a long time ago after reading Uncle Tom's Cabin. IMO there is not a better literary character that you would want to name your daughter after. I have never met anyone with the name....
For a middle name I would have chosen
Jane or Lee

Evangeline is a family name for DH. There are about 5 of them. They all pronounce it -leen. They all go by different nicknames, one is Eve, her daughter is Evie, one goes by Angie, one by Evalyn, and one insists on being Evangeline Marie. 3 of them are Evangeline Marie's and 2 are Evangeline Rose's.
Hope this helps!

1. -leen.
2. both - no one was corrected for using a NN or the full name
3. Evie
4. I believe it is Hope or Faith - can't remember at the moment, but I know it was one of those genre of names.
Wow, thanks everyone for the responses! I was a little concerned no one would know an Evangeline since it's so far down on the SSA list (but steadily climbing). You guys helped a lot with my questions.
I'm thinking about Evangeline Louise, since that was MIL's middle name before she got married (changed it to her maiden name). DH doesn't want to use family names as middle names for this baby, though, so I may just have to keep looking....The only middle name I've absolutely refused is Grace, because pairing a name that means "gospel" with Grace is just too much.
Thanks again for your help!
1. -leen
2. Nickname
3. She went by Evie. I didn't even know her name was Evangeline for a long time.
1. -lean (she's about 3 yrs old)
2. nickname
3. Evan
4. don't know it
I think it's a beautiful name. I love the idea of using the full name instead of a nickname.
She goes by Vange.
Pronounced E-van-ga-leen
