Balancing Act....

Ok Ladies. I'm just trying to get some opinions here. I am a FTM and SAH right now with my LO. My LO is going to be 3 months on April 28th. I did want to go back to school for Medical Coding and Billing and Transcribing and I can do it online!! I'm thinking this is a great thing! BUT she is going to be a lot more active (duh) and I'm just wondering if I will have a free moment to go online and do school work or am I going to be overwhelmed here? Right now I can put her in her bouncy while i am online for a bit and she's good but when she becomes more active I can't do that... just wanna hear from SAHM who are able to do online classes with older babies. TIA!!!

Re: Balancing Act....

  • personally - i would watch billing and coding. Because as technology really changes it seems offices are moving dramatically away from these services. Just a thought.

As far as actually sitting down and getting anything done (for yourself) at the PC is a bigger and bigger joke as they get older. Come 6 months it is practically impossible to do something more than 10 min at a time.  So keep that in mind. Unless you want to be up late at night doing it after baby goes to sleep.

  • Unless you plan on doing the work while your LO naps or after putting LO down to sleep for the night, I think it would be quite difficult. I'm not even able to spend 10 minutes online paying bills in peace while DD is awake (I bump from my phone throughout the day in case you were wondering how I'm managing to post, LOL).

  • I think it depends on your baby's temperament. I took online classes when DD was a mobile. She was pretty content to play next to me and I would let her explore the living room when I was on my laptop.

    it can be done.

  • I have been doing school online since DD was 5 months old...and I'm not going to lie, its hard....you really have to be self disciplined and take every moment you have to work on school...for me I always worked on school while DD slept, now that she is old I can throw on a show for 30 mins and have that time to gather what it is I need to do, so by the time she is sleeping I am ready to go...

you'll be pulling all nighters some times, like I was up till midnight last night working on an assignment and have to get up at 6 with DD...

Although as they get older and sleeping better it gets better. I would also see about getting a babysitter once a week for a few hours to help you..I take DD to my sisters once a week for 4-5 hours...honestly its not much time but its something...plus when DH is not working like crazy he helps out...like last night he cooked cleaned and put DD to bed while I worked....its hard but worth it in the end :)

  • I'm a full time student, 6 hours each semester on campus, 6 online.  I find it extremely easy, actually.  I get my work done when he is napping or in bed at night.  As long as you can delegate your time effectively, it shouldn't be a problem.

Now, onto the online classes.  Some of those all online schools are a joke.  I really would recommend doing it through a community college where you will get credits that can actually go towards a future degree if you so choose.  Many of the technical colleges don't transfer at all, and can end up also being much more costly in the end.
