Stopping Pumping HELP

I EP for my 5 1/2 month old son.  I have an abundant supply frozen that will last me for a about another month.

So I decided that I was going to stop pumping because I was pumping twice a day and only getting 4oz TOTAL each time.  So yesterday I did not pump and my breasts are full now ,leaking and a little painful.

Should I pump?  or is that not a good idea.

Looking for any advice!

Thanks!

Re: Stopping Pumping HELP

  • Cabbage has a chemical in it that will help you dry up and alleviate some of the pain. Take a few cabbage leaves and put them in your bra. Also try some Sudafed- that will help with the drying.

Drying up sucks, but it should only take a few days. Good Luck!

  • Don't pump! It will only make it worse. Get some cabbage and take some ibuprofen. The pain only lasted 24 hours for me and the engorgement was gone in about 2 days.

  • not sure about drying up..but fwiw, 4 oz total each time you pump isn't all that bad.

  • ditto pp, i used cabbage leaves and sudafed around the clock for a few days.  i did pump a teeny-tiny bit, just to relieve pressure within the first 48 hours.  but i'd also slowly been spacing my pumps out the week before, not just going cold turkey.

i took inbroufen for the discomfort (a few times it hurt to hold DS against my body), the discomfort lasted about 3 days for me.

not sure why the cabbage works - or if it did, but i figured it couldn't hurt to try!

GL - while i didn't make my eping goal - i love the time i got back when i no longer had to pump.

  • Drink 3 to 4 cups of Sage tea... that will also help dry you up along with the cabbage and motrin or tylenol for discomfort. Good luck!
  • I disagree with everyone else (but each experience is different): I pumped once more to relieve the engorgement (after not pumping for a day) and then didn't need to pump again after that. I am letting the milk dry up without any chemicals and I have no issues with leaking.

  • I didn't do the cabbage thing, but I found that Advil helped with the pain. I would also hand express a small amount when it got too uncomfortable; just enough to take the edge off.
