s/o traveling with a kid...

I love some of the ideas you posted in the post about flying with a toddler.  We're going to be making a 5.5 hour drive (without stops- so longer with the stops) and I'm planning to do the 'treat bag' every hour with T and I'd like to do something for B too.
We're going to get a dvd player, so I'm thinking a new movie will be a treat. A new book, a notebook with stickers, a travel sized coloring book and crayons I found in the Easter section at Target, and snacks in each bag.   Any other suggestions for a long car ride? Any other treats?  I may look for some finger puppets. He's never played with them before but I think he'd have fun with some imagination play- he often plays as though he's reading a book "stop! he said'.
Any suggestions for some good travel snacks a 3 year old may like?

Any ideas for a 10 month old, to keep him content on a long ride?

Thanks!!

  • Just a thought - I found that traveling with a kid, one of those magnetic doodle pads are a better than coloring books & crayons (that easily fall out of reach for everyone).

    I second that idea!

DS loves music, so maybe burning/buying a couple new fun kid CDs to sing along to in the car would be fun...that way everyone can be involved in the fun!

  • I think those are great ideas. We traveled by car- 17 hrs with ds during the holidays. We just stopped when we thought he was getting antsy. He played with puzzles, read his books, colored. We also gave him stickers. He got a few new treats but overall it was pointing out the things we passed by, singing songs, counting and the like. GL

  • Snacks: I like the squeeze yogurt things. At least here, we have a nice kid friendly organic squeeze yogurt. It has a straw spout so DS just sucking it out. No mess. No spoon. BabyBelle cheese. Circle pretzels (he likes to hold on his fingers). fruit snacks. I kept snacks in a mamamade snack sack. The Velcro amused him for a while. I also put some wet wipes in a wet bag so he could wipe his hands.
  • For travel snacks we like freeze dried fruit, fruit snacks, Clementines, animal crackers, gold fish...

I second the magna doodle idea.  DS also loves to play with the etch-a-sketch.  My parents saved ours that we had growing up and they bring it whenever we go together to visit one of my grandmas and he has a blast with it.  Stickers are also fun for the car.  And generally he plays with my iPhone quite a bit as well.

  • We have a magna doodle. I'll remember to keep that out of the packed toys.
We have an etcha sketch ornament he found and keeps playing with, maybe I'll try to find a large one and have that as a big treat for him...  that's a great idea!

Thanks ladies... keep them coming!! Wink
