Petite and pregnant with twins

Evening ladies!

I'm pretty petite about 5'0 on a good day and I'm pregnant with twins. I'm very worried that my body won't be able to handle two babies at once and something could go wrong.

I have an appointment with my new ob on the 21st, I'm ad navy and they consider twins higher risk so they sent my care back to Balboa. While I will definetly be mentioning my concerns to my new ob I just wanted to see if any other ladies were currently in or have been in my position. I had a miscarriage a year ago this month and just worry (constantly) that something could happen to my babies.

Oh and I'm sick of EVERYBODY telling me how big I'm going to get and how I won't be able to give birth naturally... ugh everybody is a freaking doctor.

Thanks so much ladies!

  • I am 5"1. I was never super skinny but I am on the petite side. I use to get comments like that all the time but I am 36 weeks and doing fine. Yes, I am huge but I am having twins!

  • I am barely 5'2"  I carried my twins to full term and they were each 5 lb 12 oz.  Your body can do it.  GL

  • It does seem that EVERYONE seems to have an opinion.  I get told, "you are so little to have twins".  I am fortunate to have a little height - 5'6" but I have a small frame and I am thin.  Other than that I don't have any other input other than I don't think being short means you cannot have a healthy pregnancy.
  • I have a pretty small pelvic frame and that's what worries me the most. But I'm definetly getting some aching from that area so I'm guessing my body is adjusting like it should be.

And yes everybody has an opinion, a coworker who just had a baby asked me the other day if my babies were 'natural'Indifferent

But she's not exactly the brightest bulb on the tree...

  • I am petite and have always been pretty small.  To say I'm 5'1" is probably stretching it (but don't tell the DMV because I may have given myself a half inch or so on my license...;) ) and I did ok carrying my twins.  I only made it to 32 weeks 6 days but I can't say that was definitely due to my size.  I was definitely all belly but lots of women on here are petite as well and have carried their twins much longer than I did, don't let anyone make you feel like you can't/won't do it!

That gives me hope! And your boys are absolutly adorable!

  • I'm 5'3 and while I"m not skinny, I've got a petite frame.  I carried my babies to 37w 1d, the date of my scheduled c-section and had healthy babies and zero complications.  I asked my doctor if my height or size had anything to do with how long I'd carry them and she said she didn't think so at all.

    GL!

  • I'm 5'2" and only made it to 29w6d, but there were a lot of factors involved in my early delivery, and my height had nothing to do with it.

That said, I was pretty damn big by 29 weeks, and I only delivered 5 lbs 4 oz total worth of baby. I was uncomfortable, but I could still walk.

Everybody is different. Take good care of yourself and rest when you need to. Good luck!

  • I'm 4'10'' and carried twins to 36w0d.  While I did have PTL issues and a shortened cervix, my OB said that she didn't really ascribe the issues I had to my height.  I was all belly and struggled to gain 35 lbs, but my LOs were healthy and were discharged from the hospital when I was.  Today they're happy, healthy 2 year olds!

Thank you!!  I forgot to say that my boys were 4.8 and 4.9 lbs so they were still pretty good size for being so early so you can definitely carry good sized babies too (like a lot of PP's seem to have).  Like all the PP's have said, you can do it - size doesn't always matter! Wink

  • I'm 5'0" and carried my twins to exactly 38 weeks, when I delivered vaginally.  They were a little small for that gestational age (5 pounds, 7 ounces, and 5 pounds, 11 ounces), but healthy.

I got this comment all the time when I was pregnant; it raises my hackles (and forces me out of my general state of lurkerdom).
  • I"m 5'2 on a tall day and I hear you! We're in this together. Right now I'm getting all the comments that I will be getting pulled out of work soon (I'm a teacher) and that I'll be on bed rest before I know it. Thaaaaanks.

  • I am 5'0 and at 38 weeks. It is possible.  These babies don't want to come out.

  • I am 5'0 and never really got that big.  I delivered my babies at 37 and never had any bedrest or restrictions.  GL!!!

  • This post gives me (5'2'') big relief!  Thanks for posting!!
  • I am 5'2" and carried quads 32w 6d.  All together they weighed nearly 16lbs.

  • I'm a little over 5'1" and was about 109lbs when I got pregnant. I had the same worries. I don't really think that being petite has anything to do with it. I made it to 36w1d and had take home babies. You can do it too. Get the Dr Luke books and listen to what she says about your activity levels. Stay positive and believe that you can do it. The miscarriage is something you should discuss with your doctor and that may make you higher risk, but being petite should not. Good luck!
  • I am barely 5'2". I carried my twins to 36w3d and had a vaginal delivery. They were 4lbs. 15oz. and 4lbs. 14oz.  From week 33 on, I was pretty miserable because almost everything hurt and baby A was sitting so low, she felt like she was in my knee Smile. You will need to take it easy towards the end because you will get exhausted very easily. I felt it a lot in my knees the last month or so. Swimming helps to stretch your legs out while taking the weight off your body. So I highly recommend the pool in your last trimester.

Oh and on a fun note the day before I delivered at 36w2d, I measured at 48 weeks pregnant. So that gives you an idea of how big I was. You will most likely start measuring about 8-10 weeks ahead once you hit 24 weeks.

  • My coworker's wife is not even 5' tall, definitely weighs under 100 lbs (soaking wet) and is currently 33 weeks along with twins. She's doing awesome, no major PTL issues, and will probably make it a few more weeks at least.

Heck, I know there are triplet moms that small, so you can do it!

  • I'm just shy of 5'2" and carried my boys to my scheduled c-section at 37 weeks. They weighed 5 lbs 10 oz and 5 lbs 13 oz and required no NICU time. No, it wasn't particularly fun, especially those last 10 weeks, but it can be done!

    Good luck!

  • Congrats on your twins!  I'm in the opposite situation - 6' tall, but you are right, EVERYONE has an opinion.  Because of my height my belly looks smaller than it really is, and people are always telling me that I'm too small for twins and need to eat more.  I just ignore them - as long as my doctor is happy, I'm happy.

  • Congrats on the twins! :)

Im 5'1" and weighted 145 before pregnancy so not super tiny but ill tell you my experience so far. Im almost 22 weeks and im uncomfy but i was expecting that. Im not too the point where i cant function but i do have awful sciatica which has been a huge PIA (literally). Im much more active this pregnancy then i was with my DS.

I am pretty big and my wonderful sister told me yesterday i look even big for having twins! (isnt she nice!).

I have a blog with belly pics if your interested.

    www.torri106.blogspot.com

They say most hit a wall at 28 weeks. And im pretty sure that wall is going to happen to me a tad sooner.

    GL to you :)

Oh and i work postpartum and i have taken care of numerous women our height with twins and they did great!

  • I'm 5'4" & 100 pounds.  I carried triplets to a scheduled c-section at 35 weeks, 6 days.  They weighed 5.3, 4.13 and 4.13.  No PTL.

I too had concerns about my size.  My MFM told me that my body would make room.  My tummy measured 4 feet around the night before my c-section.

  • I know exactly how you feel. Im 5'2 and pre-pregnancy weight a 100 pounds. Im 25 weeks and i dont know if im going to be able to make it even though my feternal medicine docotr and ob act like im doing great. all i want to do is sleep and eat because my hunger is never satistfied. The whole time ive been pregnant and still today im worried that some thing is going to happen because i thought i had misscarryed at the begganing and when i went to the ob gyn they told me i was crazy and never was pregnant and i went back in two weeks and i had three sacks with two babys (disappering twins). Then they told me that my chances of having twins was slim and one baby was very small compared to the other. Now their great and i dont have to go to feternal medicine but once a month. Have faith and it will all work out because God wont give you more then you can handle. I hate people saying how big were going to get because we already know and for our babys we dont want to be small, if it makes you feel any better at 25 weeks i dont have stretch marks yet on my belly. I still get comments on how big im and my mom says she feels sorry for me cause i still have time to go. Wtatch the movie Multipullys in the womb by the discovery channel i rented from the library in Kentcky. It will WOW you!  It shows a vaginal birth with twins  it possiable but risky because your utrus can start toclose on the second baby. My ob gyn told me that in his experience and he delievered me that vaginal births are too risky for multiplys.  Good luck girl!
  • Did you just find out you were having twins?  You're one day ahead of me...I don't recall a twin post on the Oct board but then again I don't check it on the weekends.  CONGRATS!  I love that there are others so close to my EDD, we can be in this together!! :)

I'm pretty average - 5-4 ish, but short in the torso.  Honestly, your ability to deliver has more to do with your bone structure than anything else.  I remember my first internal with my son where the midwife checked my pubic bone structure by running her fingers along each side of my pelvis.  THE MOST INVASIVE exam ever, so painful, but she was able to confirm that I didn't have any funny dips or strange bone structure that would prevent me from delivering vaginally.  Luckily we know this information now so I shouldn't ever have to have an exam like that again LOL

  • You can do it!

    I am 5"1.  I delivered the babies via a C-section at 38w2d. They weighed 7lbs 14oz and 7lbs 1 oz.

  • Don't worry.  You'll just grow out instead of up.
  • Don't worry!

I am 5'0 also, carried to 36 weeks (the last 10 were on the couch but not related to my height!), twins were 5.6 and 5.12.  I had a c-section based more on their positioning and the fact that I had no dilation, no contractions, etc after my water broke & we just decided it would be safest for everyone. However, I never had my heart set on a vaginal delivery & suspected all along I'd have a section & was fine w/ that.

I gained about 50 lbs (was & am normal weight) with 5 of those pounds in the last week from fluid. My fundus measured about 48 at the end I think, so I was big but even when I had my shower at 25 weeks, people kept commenting on how they thought i'd be so much bigger, etc so I think people have this vision of enormity or something. I have a friend who had 2 singleton pregnancies & seriously looked bigger w/ both than most ppl I know who had multiples so you never know.

    GL!

  • I'm 5'1 and still get so many comments about my size and carrying twins.  My OB even thinks it's amazing how big I am for my size.  At 34 weeks my belly was measuring 49 weeks! No issues so far and am hoping to make it to my planned csection at 38 weeks (have to have one because A is breech).  Good luck!

  • I'm about 5'3'' and usually weight in the 117lb range.

Did I get HUGE with twins?  It was unreal, actually! :)

But my body handled it just fine.  I was uncomfortable, of course, but it was well worth it!

It's really amazing what your body is capable of.  I was going through old pictures on the computer and couldn't get over what had happened to me. (in a good way)
