DS has been eating NON.STOP. So far we have been successful with BFing but I feel like this kid is sucking me dry! I'm not kidding that he has been feeding every 2 hours (or less) for at least an hour each time for the past week. Apparently when DH was a baby he was also like this and because he was constantly hungry his mom eventually gave up of BFing and switched to formula. I really don't want this to eventually happen with us ![]()
I know sometimes LOs can be lazy or slow eaters or that they want to nurse out of comfort but I really don't think this is the case with DS. He has a good latch, he is actively sucking and swallowing the whole time and he is easily soothed by a pacifier. He will also make it clear when he is full and just wants the pacifier to suck on by pushing and turning away from my nipple. I also don't think it is an issue of him not getting enough. I've been pumping occasionally and when he hasn't just eaten I can easily get 6 or 7 oz total and even when he has nursed off both breasts (and seems to be full) I can still pump up to 3 oz. I had wanted to start pumping more, not only to get a freezer stash going for when it is time for me to go back to work but also because he seems to be a little bit more efficient eating from the bottle and that way I could keep better track of exactly how much he is eating/getting. With the way he has been constantly eating though I haven't been able to pump enough to get ahead of him being hungry, I always just end up giving him whatever I just pumped because I end up feeling too drained to be able to nurse more.
I'm wondering if I should think about supplementing with a bottle of formula maybe at night?? His 6 week check up is coming up so I will definitely talk to his pedi if it is still an issue then.
Re: How much longer can this continue?
This. Sounds like a growth spurt. Totally normal.
eta: It lasted almost a week for us

Don't listen to her. Unless your pedi says to supplement with formula, don't. Of course it's up to you in the long run. If you would rather just formula feed that's up to you, but if you really want to continue bf'ing, don't give up!
