1st Trimester

Heartbeat! And a few questions :)

I went for my second visit on Friday, at 9 weeks 2 days, and my midwife explained that we might not hear a heartbeat yet (which I knew).  She said she was going to try to listen with the doppler anyways.  And she found it within about 20 seconds!!  She ended up finding it twice.  It was the most amazing sound I have ever heard!  (This is my first.)  It has made me feel a lot less worried and hope that things are progressing well!

Also, the past 2 weeks I have had sharp pains in my upper and middle of my butt.  Mostly on the left side.  Isn't it too early to be sciatic pain?  It doesn't travel, but when it happens I limp around and even hurts to sit.

Ok one more question!  The baby's heartbeat was found on my lower left pelvis and most of my twinges and weird feelings are on the left side of my pelvis and abdomen.  Shouldn't I be feeling it all over?

Re: Heartbeat! And a few questions :)

  • I had sciatic pain throughout my entire first pregnancy and this time around is no different. Mine started a couple weeks ago. Stretching helps a lot.

  • Congrats on hearing the heartbeat!  It is the most wonderful sound and, for me, never gets old.  Sciatic pain usually travels down your leg, but you're probably feeling some other nerve pain.  I have gotten the pain you described off-and-on for years.  Icing your lower back might help, but I can't remember if there are any restrictions on using ice during pregnancy.  I wouldn't worry about where you are feeling the twinges, unless they become especially painful.

  • I get really bad sciatic pain when pregnant too..Usually bad in the beginning and again at the end, it seems to lessen mid pregnancy.

  • I have had sciatic pain in the past that had nothing to do with pregnancy and ice just made it worse. The ice made it really bad. Heat would help a little bit but the best was stretching, as well as Motrin but I don't know what is allowed with pregnancy.
