The color yellow

We just painted the living room a buttery yellow. It's been lavender for the past 5.5 years. The lavender was kind of calming and rich. The yellow is so bright. Anyone else with a yellow living room and what accent colors do you have?

Re: The color yellow

  • My living room is a very pale yellow.  The furniture is dark brown and we have a red accent wall and red accents.

  • Our cabinets in our kitchen are a buttery yellow... we have cream and crimson accents :)
  • Yellows are very tough to pick. If it feels "so bright" I'd say you need to try again. Ours is a very neutral almost wheaty yellow. We have a browny gold couch, cherry wood things, dark reds and cobalt blue accessories.

  • It's ok but I'm not in love with it. I think I need curtain and an art piece over the couch. The couch is a dark brown, front door is a dark cherry, book shelf is a dark cherry, and we have an old hope chest in here that is a dark wood. The mirror is oiled bronze as is the clock. We need to redo the flooring, which we were looking towards a bamboo but I think a dark wood would look a lot better with this color. The problem is that is is easier to change the paint vs. the flooring.I am going to live with it for a little while before I give Shane the bad news. He's gonna not be so happy.

At least it isn't smile face yellow but it may be a bit too much.

  • Our old place was Freshaire Wave of Grain which I really liked.  Its just a warm tan color and its No VOC.

We had grey/lavendar in our bedroom, red in the living room and various colors but mostly green in C's room.  Really, it goes with anything.

  • Our living areas and hallway are Valspar's Vanilla Bean.  We did test patches in qbout 4 shaeds before picking this color.  5 years later and I still love it.  The living room has an oragne accent wall, tan sofa, white rug and blue and orange artwork.  The dining room has a robin's egg blue accent wall and dark wood furniture.

Yellow is the hardest color I've decorated with.  I saw the blue I have in my bedroom in Domino and that was it.

  • I liked the lavender but not for the living room. We put up about 8 different test yellows from three different places in the last month. We had friends and my mom in here and it was the one the majority picked.

Our whole house has color. I hate white walls just from living in apartments for so long. We have way too many greens and blues, though, or I would have done it in green. The house we painted green (sage), the playroom is green (grassy color), our bedroom is green (Olive). The boys room and the bathroom are blue. The kitchen is a gray color. The hallway is a wheat color. We have a very tiny house too so it all has to mesh well together.

If I can get my phone to post a pic I will.

  • The outside of our house is yellow and we love it. it's got white and light blue trim. Then we painted the office a color wash technique in yellow. It's two shades with various sloppy brush strokes. I really love the color in there. We then painted the kitchen a warm yellow when we did a remodel 3 years ago. The first one DH painted was awful. To brown. I think it was called number 2 pencil. We got another one, and he redid it, and I don't like it either, but he was in no mood to repaint AGAIN, so it is still that color. It's to warm still. Oh well. We have red accents in the kitchen.

  • I just finished painting our whole master bedroom yellow today. It is bright. More than I thought it would be, but I am hoping getting our furniture in there will tone it down a little. I do love yellow tho :) We have dark espresso brown furniture, there will be white sheer curtain with lots of b&w photos with dark frames, and white and light light blue accents (in the bedding we have, etc). Oh, and a neutral colored rug. If its too yellow for you, maybe try doing an accent wall so there isnt so much of it- maybe in a lighter shade, or a cream-ish color?
