2nd Trimester

I feel like I am abnormally hungry

Honestly, it was never like this with DS.  With DS, I gained 30-35lbs total and he was almost 9lbs.

I know that it's normal to get hungry a lot when pregnant.  But I feel like this is out of control.  Even with M/S, I was hungry all the time.  I had gained 5lbs at my 12 week appt, but in reality, it was more like 8 or so b/c the baseline they used was 8 weeks, not pre-preg.  If I don't eat something every 2 hours, I am a mess.  Hungry, nauseous and just feel awful.  I do everything I can to keep it healthy.  But healthy or not, this much food is bound to make an impact! I figured that it would be a first tri thing and would go away or at least start to taper off in the second tri, but it's still going strong.  If I eat a piece of fruit (apple, banana, etc.), I am still hungry.  It has to be something more substantial than that to keep me full for even 2 hours.  Could this hunger signal something else or is it simply my body saying it really needs all this food?! Anyone else still this hungry at 14 weeks?

  • Fruits are simple carbs. You should make more of your snacks higher in protein and complex carbs. They have more "sticking" power to combat the hunger. I totally understand though, I am also an every 2 hour eater, and was through my whole first pregnancy. Keep those more frequent snacks at 100-200 calories each and you'll do great.

Yeah, fruit was just an example of trying to be really low cal.  I eat trail mix granola bars (nuts in them), peanut butter on toast or an apple, cheese, etc.  It's all gone and I am starving again really quickly.  For lunch at work, I try ot eat a salad every day.  A large salad.  complete with chicken, cheese, seeds of some kind, etc. and still...2 hours.  Ugh.  I just don't want to be larger this time, as I have a whole stash of clothes I need to fit into ;)

  • I am the same way! I can eat all the time, but I definitely need something every hour or two! I was a personal trainer all through college, so I know what I should be eating and how much of it, but there is just NO WAY I can stop my hunger!  It is really ridiculous. I am drinking TONS of water so my belly is full, but that hasn't been helping too much. Fingers Crossed our hunger will subside soon :)

  • I think maybe it goes in waves? Like I wasn't hungry at all at the beginning and then I went through a phase where I couldn't eat enough and then back to the not eating as much. But I still have to eat every 2 hours or so during the day even when I'm not just starving. It keeps me from feeling terrible.

Also, try to snack on some kind of complex carb and a protein every time. The combanation of the two keep you feeling full for longer. So eat a cheese stick or some turkey with your piece of fruit.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. Are you still exercising? That'll help you keep the extra weight off more than anything I think.

  • I also think it's just a part of pregnancy, that may come and go. I know in my first trimester (towards the end) I had to eat every 2 hours or I would just about pass out. Now, and I'd since since about week 13 I can go much longer without eating (at work, for example).

I would just listen to your body and remember that your metabolism is revved up a bit so that might explain some of the hunger. Try pairing your carbs with a protein every time and if you can, add some good fats in your diet (I don't know what type of fats you eat). I find that when I have the right combo of all three- carbs, protein and fat, I am fuller much, much longer. Even when I eat a salad.

Also, are you exercising a lot? If so, that might have something to do with it...

Oh, and fruits will definitely leave you hungry. When I eat fruit I always pair it with something else: An Apple with hummus or almond butter, a banana with a handful of almonds or walnuts. Gotta find the right combination for your body! Good luck :)

  • I am 22 weeks and as hungry as a hippo.  I have to eat carbs all the time to keep me satisfied.  I'm sure that I've made some bad eating decisions but I'm starved!  I have been consistent with only gaining a pound a week after loosing 9 in the first trimester?.I barely weigh as much as I did when first getting pregnant.  So, I guess my body needs the food!
  • Same here. I've been ravenous 24/7 since 6 weeks or so. And I do balance my carbs/protein/fat when I have meals and snacks. It doesn't help!
