Thinking about planting garden this summer

I am really thinking about planting flowers and a garden this year. If we do a garden I will probably just do some of the basics probably tomatoes, potatoes, green beans, possibly peppers and maybe few other items. I also want to plant some flowers in front of my house this year. Last summer we had 3 bushes that I did not like so I removed them and I want to plant some flowers there and some plants in that area. Anybody else going to plant a garden or plant some flowers this summer? I will not plant anything for a few more weeks probably.

  • I always plant flowers. The past few years I planted impatians, begonias, marigolds, and petunias. Last year was the first year I grew vegetables, I started with a tomato plant. It took off and got HUGE, I had so many tomatoes. This year I am going to try some other vegetables too, maybe peppers or green beans.

  • That sounds like a great idea!  My DH built a raised bed for us to vegetable garden in, but unfortunately we are moving at the end of May and most likely will not get to grow any veggies this year.  But I will be doing flowers/shrubs/landscaping at our new house for sure.  It's very therapeutic to get out there in the dirt, plus you get to enjoy how nice it all looks once you are done.

    I say go for it!

Watermelon and lettuce sound good also. I thougt about already planting stuff but I do not want it to get to cold at night. The crate sounds like a really good idea.

It sounds like you have a really pretty flower garden.

  • Funny you posted this now because I spent the better portion of today planting my veggies outside.  I started them indoors as seeds in a mini Jiffy greenhouse and just transplanted most of them today.  This is my first time trying a vegetable garden.  I just moved down South after spending the past few years in a Chicago condo with nothing but window boxes on my back deck.  There was something therapeutic about watching my seeds sprout.  It was so cool!  Fingers crossed that they survive outdoors!

That is a good idea using jiffy greenhouse. I am glad you had no problems transporting them. I hope your vegetables survive the outdoors.

  • I started some plants indoors in January. I have beef-stake tomatoes and cherry tomatoes for my veggies so far. I think I'm also going to do sugar snap peas and spinach. Then for flowers I have orange and white marigolds, petunias, and inpatients. I started them in Jiffy peat-pods in little dixi cups. They are the perfect size and they work really well for me. The plants are coming along pretty nicely. I have to wait until mid May to plant them outside, though. There's too much of a frost risk right now.

  • I'll do one again this year, but it's unfortunately still too cold here to start ours. I usually do tomatoes, zucchini, lettuce, peppers and a whole bunch of herbs. I think we will add some things this year and expand it out some. I can't wait to get in and play in the dirt!! GL!

  • I worked on our flower garden in the backyard for a few hours today. We moved in this house the end of last may so didn't garden here last year too much.

  • DH plants a garden every year.  We do tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, squash, zucchini, watermelon, cantaloupe, and some other things.  It is too nice to always have fresh veggies around!

I wish I had space to have a garden!  And less of a black-thumb - I have an herb garden on my patio, but the only herb I can keep alive is rosemary, and my basil always dies within a few weeks (I think it might not get enough sun).

When my parents get the new house, there is a space that I am going to use to plant some orange, lemon, and lime trees. I won't be out there enough to maintain a more extensive garden, I don't think.

An orange tree sounds really good. I would love a fruit tree apple. Though DH does not want one.
