Pregnant after a Loss

holy sh!t! Comical scare (NPGALR) long

So DH is a chemist. A coworker of mine asked if he could try to clean her husband's wedding band. He's a doctor and broke a mercury thermometer on it (i have no idea why he was using an old termometer) and ruined the ring. He tried boiling it off, he tried burning it off on an open flame. The ring is a mess, mercury still on it. So DH tells me to tell them to wrap it in plastic, since it's toxic and that he might be able to get it off, might ruin the ring all together. They say that's fine, it's as good as ruined as it is anyway. So she gives it to me wrapped up in a wad of plastic wrap. We were at work and I didn't want to touch it so I put that inside a plastic wrapper that held fork &spoon. I gave it to DH, who puts it on the side table in the living room. That was wednesday. I have a habit of picking up after DH and his food wrappers. Trash day is Friday.

You see where this is going? So tonight I remind him to take the ring into work, when we realize, we can't find it. We look under all the furniture - in case the cats batted it around. I'm feeling terribly irresponsible. Panicing trying to figure out what I'm going to tell her. Should I tell her I threw her husband of 30+ years wedding band away? Do I try to find it at the dump? Where the fvck is the dump? Do I tell her DH's cleaning process dissolved it? If I do, how do I get DH to take the blame? This is all racing through my mind.

When I realize, there's one bag of trash outside. So i grap a pair of gloves and start going through it. Piece by piece. All the way at the bottom - with pineapple skins, pork fat, a rotten peach, and what seems like a half a bottle of ketchup - is that wad of plastic.

Thank god.

  • I'm so glad you found it!  I do want to know if he's able to get it off as I'm completely curious.  FWIW, I grew up with a vial with an ounce or so of mercury.  My dad used to play with it as a child - in his hands, back and forth.  Thankfully, he's not a mad hatter.  However, I was really surprised at just how heavy that small amount of mercury is.  I am also thankful that he never let us open the vial.

  • I'm glad you found it.  It really doesn't sound like he's going to be able to save it anyways, but that sucks you had to dig through all the garbage.

My life has a superb cast but I can't figure out the plot.
  • I'm glad it was found.

Moving forward though, your DH may want to keep heavy metals like that away from you.  Mercury, arsenic and the like can be bad for a pregnant woman to be exposed to. (My career is cleaning up haz waste sites)

It sounds like it was pretty well contained, so probably no harm done...but its still nothing I'd want in my house even temporarily.
