Should I bring baby upstairs to bed early?

Hi all,

DD is almost a month old and we've had her sleeping in our room. First she was in the newborn napper in the PNP, and now we've been trying the RNP which is working alot better. She basically sleeps 3 hour stretches, with sometimes a 4 hour stretch.  DH and I go to bed fairly late, usually around 11ish. Should we try bringing her upstairs to bed earlier than that or wait until we both go up to bed? Once she's in her crib, I think we will do that, but not sure about now while she's in our room. She does get fussy around the nightime, and I feel like I end up BFing her quite a bit to get her to relax and get ready for sleep. Thoughts??

  • We usually put LO to sleep in her PNP between 11 and 12 when we go to bed.  She'll usually sleep until about 8 or 9 the next morning, with 2 feedings during the night.  She's awake (and sometimes fussy) between 6pm and bedtime almost every evening.  In that time period she eats about every hour to hour and a half but only for 5-10 minutes each time.  I just BF on demand so sometimes this all changes, but usually it works out that way.  The few times where she has fallen asleep around 8 or 9 and I left her alone she woke up in the middle of the night wide awake and wouldn't go back to sleep for 3 or 4 hours.  Since her schedule fits my schedule right now, I'm leaving it be.  If having your LO go to bed around 11 with you works, then I would keep it at that.  And I wouldn't worry about feeding her a lot during the evenings.  A lot of babies cluster feed in the evenings so that they can sleep longer stretches at night.  I know we usually get one 5 hour stretch and one 3 hour stretch.  If what your doing is working for you, I wouldn't change it.  HTH!

  • We were doing the same thing and recently started trying for more of a putting him to bed routine. He was getting super fussy around 10pm-2am before. Once we started putting him to bed around 8-8:30, he calmed down. Now he sleeps right through his fussy time and wakes up at about 2:30 to eat, and then again around 5 or 6.

We put him in the PNP when he goes to bed and once he wakes up the first time I bring him into bed with us. We both usually fall back asleep during one or both of the night feedings, so it has worked out pretty well for us. Typically he is up for the day by 7...which is early, but better for me to get on a schedule now before I have to start working again. On the weekend (if we don't have anywhere to go), my husband will take him downstairs once he is officially awake and let me sleep as late as I want. Heaven.
