travel checklist?

Hi everyone, I am popping over from December moms.

We are flying with DS next wknd. He'll be almost 4 mo. He is EBF. We're going to a warm climate. Anyone know of a checklist out there for traveling for this age that they recommend? I don't want to forget anything! Any other tips are appreciated as well.

Re: travel checklist?

  • I'll be watching this thread too since I am flying solo with my LO tomorrow.  Here's what I'm planning for my carry on:  2 extra outfits for LO, extra shirt for me, paci, nursing cover, small bottle of BM (just incase for whatever reason), disposable changing pads, disposable diaper bags (for dirty diapers), hand sanitizer, diapers/wipes

It's been suggested to me to put LO in a sleeper outfit with feet.  This is so socks and shoes dont fall off through security/boarding/unboarding, etc.  Plus, they are easy to change diapers in.  Good luck!

  • I don't know where there's a checklist, but here are a couple of things that might seem weird to bring but that you wouldn't want to be caught without if you needed them:

If you have a breastpump and bottles (or a cup for cup feeding), I'd bring those along.  I know you EBF, but if you needed them for some reason and didn't have them, you'd both be hurting, so it'd be worthwhile to have them just in case.  I don't know if you use a nursing cover or not, but our DD has developed a serious hatred of it, especially if it's a warmer temperature.  We're still trying to figure that one out.

One of my husband's co-workers has 3 strollers b/c she keeps forgetting them when they go on vacation and having to buy new ones

light sleep bags for the warmer climate

And a heavier one in case there's air conditioning and it's cold inside

We always bring the baby Tylenol and dropper or syringe to administer it

and also saline drops and the bulb syringe just in case she gets a stuffy nose.

Even if your DS isn't teething yet, I'd still bring teething rings if you're going to be gone for a while, because he might just take the opportunity to start while you're away

Bring some toys.  Our DD really started to get into playing around with them when she was around 4 mo old.

Some sort of sun hat and sunscreen if you're going to spend time outside

A light jacket (for the wind and also in case it gets a little cool at night or in case it's cold inside... actually, probably a sweater or medium jacket in case the air conditioning is really cranked up inside)

Um, that's all that I can think of that isn't the normal day-to-day stuff.  Decide if you want to buy anything there or if you want to take it all with you... if you want or need to bring it all with, take more diapers and wipes than you think you could ever possibly need!

We flew with DS when he was 11 weeks old.  It was much easier than I thought it would be.  We stayed in a hotel and had a rental car, so I?m going to make the same assumptions about your trip too.  We used the pack n?play provided by the hotel, but brought our own carseat.

    For the airport/plane:

    - Stroller/carseat combo ? you can use these to get your LO through the airport if you want (although you will have to carry him through security and run your stroller/carseat through the x-ray machine).  They can be gate-checked so they won?t count against your baggage limit and then they?ll be available at your destination.

    - Sling/carrier of your choice ? I believe you?ll still have to take him out when you go through security

    - Boppy ? I BF and it was great to have the boppy on the plane.  You can keep it in your lap during take-off and landing for when you nurse

    - Pacifier (if you use one) ? The actual descent begins before the pilot announces it.  I used the paci to tide DS over during the descent and then we nursed in the airport after landing

    - Spare shirt for you, spare outfit (or 2) for DS.  We used a sleeper with feet like a PP suggested

    - Diapers, wipes, ointment, changing pad, bag for dirty diapers, bag for dirty clothes ? bring enough diapers on to hold you over in case you get delayed.  I think we went with 5 diapers for a 3 hour plane trip (and only needed to do one change)

    - A few toys that DS has shown interest in

    - A blanket for napping

    - Drool bibs and burp clothes

    - I don?t like nursing covers, but I did bring a muslin blanket (one of the Target Aden/Anais ones) to toss over my shoulder since the plane has such close quarters.

    - Snacks for you!  BFing makes me hungry and thirsty.

    - I think it?s easiest to nurse if you wear a nursing tank with a lightweight cardigan or hoodie.  That way you only have to let the flap down and don?t have to mess around with hiking your shirt up in cramped quarters.

We checked almost everything that was non-baby related so we wouldn?t have anything extraneous to deal with while in transit.

    Other things to bring:

    - Nightlight for the hotel room

    - Sheet for the pack n?play

    - Extra blanket or two to serve as a playmat for DS

    - Swaddle blanket/sleep sack

    - Noise machine (if you use one)

    - 3 outfits per day (baby outfits are small so bring more if you want).  If you?re going to a warmer climate, consider that the buildings might be air-conditioned.

    - Hat with brim

    - Bath items for DS (shampoo, lotion, towels/washcloths - hotel towels are often rough)

    - Just in case kit: Tylenol, saline drops, nose suctioner, nail clippers, dr?s phone number and after-hours number

Someone also directed me to this list on babycenter: https://www.babycenter.com/packing-checklist-for-traveling-with-baby

Depending on how long you?re going for, you can always buy diapers at your destination if your bags are tight.  We only went for three days, so we brought diapers for the whole trip and skipped the breastpump.

Good luck and enjoy your trip!
