Another walking question... how long until they're good at it?

DS is almost a year. I know he's by no means behind or anything. He started walking a month ago, just a few steps. He just seems really reluctant to walk on his own. He can walk 8 or 9 steps but will only do it if we initiate it. He's been crawling since 6 months and cruising since 7, so I'm surprised he hasn't warmed up to walking. How long did it take your LO's to want to walk and do it often? I know there's no right answer to this but I'm curious about your experiences.

  • My daughter was cruising very early and took steps very early as well. At first, she was fearless, then she suddenly seemed apprehensive to take steps without "help" or "coaxing". Once she built up her confidence and realized she could walk on her own, she took off. She started really walking at 11 1/2 months.

  • DD started walking unassisted a little later (13 months), but when she started walking on her own she took off.  There were no wobbly, apprehensive steps.  She had been using push toys to walk around for months before then.  I think she wanted to make sure she perfected walking before she tried it on her own.  Now at nearly 16 months she enjoys running.

  • I'd say within a month or two of when they start on their own, most LOs are walking pretty well.

ETA: I bet you'll see a huge difference as another month passes by.

  • DS started walking unassisted at 9 months,he was using push toys to walk since about 7 months, and it took him about a month to get comfortable with it.. now he's running around like a crazy man wanting to walk everywhere.

  • DS took his first steps the day before his birthday. He loves to walk while I hold his hand, but he will only take about 6-8 steps on his own before he gets down to crawl. He still walks very wobbly, lol. He started cruising at 9 months and was standing on his own by then as well.
  • Not long enough.
