Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

If you baby is walking....or not

My DS is 14 1/2 months old and is not walking or standing independently yet. He will cruise, push toys, and walk holding our fingers but if we let go he sits immediately. I am wondering how hold your child was when they started walking. I know that ever child is different but i am just curious when others have started.

Re: If you baby is walking....or not

  • Don't stress I had the same post a few months back. My DD didn't start walking until 16.5 months old. She was very careful and really took her time. I was worried all her friends were walking I kept thinking something major was wrong. Now at 19 months she is sprinting. Hang in there it will come.

  • Bryce does the same exact thing - he throws himself on the ground and wants to take off crawling when we try to get him to walk in our hands. Only in the past week or so has he allowed us to walk with him for about a minute, and then he is done with it. We had his 12 month appt on Monday and his Pedi isn't concerned. Where he is cruising, standing for a few seconds by himself and walking with his walking toy - he said it is coming. He said that he wouldn't be concerned unless he isn't walking by 18 months - then we would readdress the issue.

  • DD1 just started walking this week at almost 15 months. She started standing unassisted about 2 days before she started walking. Her twin has been walking since 11 months. Don't worry....each baby truly does it when they're ready.
  • DD started walking at 10 months. She runs around now.

  • DS started walking at 10 months. He's always on the go.

  • Preston was 14 months at least.

Harison is only 12 months, but isn't walking yet. He will pull up to everything, cruise a tad, has let go of things and stood in one spot for a few seconds and he has walked behind his activity table (pushing it across the wood floor), but even his walk behind walker is too fast for him right now.

  • My DD is the same age as your DS and no walking yet. At 1 yr I was very concerned because the only thing she would do it roll everywhere. No crawling, no pulling up, very little cruising, couldn't walk behind push toys etc. The pedi said if this hadn't changed by 15 months we would have to do EI. At about 13 months DD had a developmental explosion and started to do all of the above. She still doesn't walk on her own and does the same thing as your DS when you let go, but I am not worried because she is doing all the "precursors to walking" so I know she physically can do it she is just waiting til she's ready.
  • Riley started walking at 8.5 months.  My niece was born four days before Ri and she didn't start walking until 12-13 months.  All babies develope differently, but at least he's showing some interest in walking as he's using the walker and what not.

  • 11 1/2 months BUT I can relate to how you feel. My dd took forever to learn to crawl. Some babies just take longer to learn certain skills. If your child isn't focused on walking just yet, he is might be more interested in learning other skills (fine motor/language). I wouldn't worry. Once he decides he wants to walk, he'll be running all over the place.

  • My daughter is a little over 14 months and does all the same things as yours, and also will stand independently. She's taken a few steps here and there, but not consistently. It doesn't seem to occur to her most of the time to try to walk, she just immediately sits and crawls if she needs to get somewhere. Oh, I guess she doesn't walk holding our fingers, but that's just because we don't ever do that for her. Like someone else said, I know it's fine because she's doing all the precursors to walking so it isn't like she can't bear weight on her legs or something.

I will say, it is getting extremely frustrating, and just dirty - she climbs all over the place and now that it's warm enough to be outside, she's pretty much a complete mess every night, and I'm worried that her pants are going to wear holes in them. Oh well, I guess!

you are right about the fine motor/language. he has been talking in 2-3 word phrases sense he was 11 months. the doc said at his 12 month check up his vocabulary is around the 18 month mark.
