when and how did you POTTY TRAIN?

our son is 16 months old and is outgrowing diapers already (he's size 6). Have any of you potty trained this early and do you have any tips/tricks to make it a little less intimidating?

did you use a certain potty chair?

any feedback is appreciated. thanks!

Holy crap! My 18 month old is in Size 3s and has room to go yet! He inherited his father's lack of azz, luckily.

Hmm... my 30 lb 20-month-old still fits into size 5s... I don't think he's ready yet and don't plan to try until he's closer to 2.

My 20 month old is probably around 30 pounds, but he's tall and skinny. He mostly wears CDs but can still fit into a 4 in disposables.

So far he's good about letting me know when he's dirtied a diaper but apparently months away from letting me know BEFORE he goes. Still, we've got a Baby Bjorn step stool and seat for when we do start.

Unfortunately, if he isn't ready, he isn't ready. I had 2 failed attempts to PT using a variation of the 3 day method with my DD until she finally decided she wanted to PT. While we were in NY. In the middle of a wedding. Where she was the flower girl. Oy. Anyway, definitely start introducing the topic but don't push (that can backfire bigtime). If you want to go the potty chair route, you can -- let him help pick it out, as that can up interest and investment in the process for him. I chose to go straight to seats on the actual toilet so I didn't have to 2 step it but I do think that was a reason it took a little longer. Basically, you'll have to try whatever works. Just ask if he wants to sit on the toilet and if he tries, praise him for the effort. DD was very treat motivated so she got 1 M&M for peeing and a hershey kiss for poop. I gradually lengthened that out and eliminated it altogether around a holiday where she had plenty of candy anyway. Some I know respond to stickers towards a gift or just the stickers themselves, some matchbox cars or other small toys or special treats like TV time. I will say in mass generalizations here boys are supposed to be harder to train than girls, although DD wasn't PTed until just shy of 3YO. I'd probably be looking for alternatives (i.e. larger diaper sizes, CD, pullups, etc.) as you might need them. Plus realize that nighttime PTing can take until 6 or 7 (just physiologically) so you'll need to be prepped for that too. GL!

I bought DD a potty chair when she was about 18 months old and put it in my bathroom without mentioning it. She found the chair one day soon after and was inquisitive, so she sat down and pretended to use it for several months. At around 22 months, she got really interested in it (she followed me into the bathroom nearly every time I used the restroom) and at the same time said she didn't want diapers anymore, so I let her go naked around the house for a week, during which time she figured out when she had to potty. After the first week, she was pretty good at telling me when she had to go potty, so I put a dress on her with no undies for a few days. She didn't have any accidents, so I put her in very loose shorts for another week. She had one accident that week, but it was no big deal, so at the end of the that week, she got undies. She was fully trained by the time she was 25 months old. I don't do the reward system so I'm not sure how effective it is, but I've heard other moms say is works great.

The only problem I had with potty training was when family members showed up the first week when she was naked and I had to explain what was going on since DD refused to wear clothes that week (thank goodness it was summer!).

I think Pampers go up to size 7 but you might have to get them online. I thought Adrian was going to outgrow size 6 too but then he started getting taller and leaner so he's back to fitting comfortably in size 5. At night I use size 6. Adrian is at least 35" tall and 30 lbs. Maybe your son will grow more slowly now, it happens around 16-17 months, so don't panic just yet

I'm not even buying a potty until he's 2, waste of time.

My oldest was trained at 1 year but that was back in Russia.

We started training Jason when he was 2.5 and bought all kinds of different potties, but he wasn't ready yet. When he was about 3 he decided he was ready and got trained in a day or two. At that point he started using regular toilet as is, without the child-seat or whatever they are called. We still have all those potties and seats in the basement - maybe Erin will use them eventually.
