We had comcast, but cancelled it because it was pricey and we didn't use it. Vonage has cheap rates I think. We will probably get a land line once Wes is 3 or so, in case he ever needed to call 911, or had a babysitter that needed to.

Vonage, I think its around $20 a month but that is for unlimited long distance and calling. I think there is an even cheaper plan for around $14 a month. We would just bundle with comcast but we have comcast business internet because of all the huge downloads we pull off xbox live.
vonage! We only use it for our alarm. I never even think about it. My BB was dying after a 3 min conversation and after running around looking for my charger DH said "use the house line"...OH!

We've had them for 8 years now and not a single complaint - I love their visual voicemail - if someone leaves a voicemail on the homephone, I get it in text in my email.

We have a landline but it is a Internet based voip phone. (Ooma Telo) We got it at Costco for around $200 but there is no monthly cost, once you purchase the system it runs through your Internet line. The phones are just like regular home phones except the bases plug into an outlet not a phone jack. We love it and have never had any problems with it. It takes just a second longer to connect but it sounds great, has voicemail, and it is free long distance in the US. We didn't have a land line before DS but wanted to have one in case of an emergency. Its work looking in to if you don't want a monthly bill.
We originally had a bundle with Comcast, but when we decided to cut some expenses we cut out the phone since we never used it, but now that my mom is watching DS a couple days a week and loses/forgets her cell phone frequently we decided to get "Magic Jack." It's also internet based and you pay a one time fee I believe (although I'm not positive on all the logistics since DH set it up .. )
We don't have landline. Another option is a very basic cell phone (no frills = minimal confusion) added to your current cell phone plan (if that's an option), which would be ~10/mo and could be dedicated "house line" that doesn't leave the house.
