When did you begin taking your child to a pediatric dentist? I know of where I want to take him but I haven't called to see what they recommend so I wanted to see what most people do. He has 8 teeth if that matters
Our dentist likes to see them at age 2. All they do is count teeth and make sure they are being cleaned good enough. Dentist says if he starts to see kids early, it helps them not to be nervous when they are older. If LO does need any additional work when he is older, LO will usually cooperate and it can be done in the office. If child doesn't start going to the dentist until an older age and needs work, the kids frequently get nervous and sometimes have to go to a hospital and receive anesthesia to have work done. My son had a few visits at age 3 that he cried, but since then he loves going.
I work in a childrens hospital recovery room and the kids we see typically are kids who just freak out for cleanings and xrays.
Also MOST of the time they are the same kids who parents request coke in a sipper cup or bottle for when they wake up. I wonder why they need dental work?
My son has been going to Dr. Callen since he was 18 mos. old. She is so wonderful. The office is extremely child friendly. Everyone is so sweet there and they have a "quiet room" where your child can be examined privately if he/she is upset.
Everyone has different opinions about when the right time to take your child in for the first visit is. In the link above they recommend by the first birthday. I think it is good to get in that first year. If there are problems your dentist can identify them early on and I think it has helped my son that he has been going regularly because he doesn't freak out when he goes as he knows what to expect.
