Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Moms who Ferbered,

We're starting Ferber tonight. DD is a horrible sleeper and it's not good for any of us at this point.

I've read the book and made DH read it but I'm still nervous so any pointers or suggestions for us?

I was wondering if you did naps and bedtime or one then the other?

I'm very nervous b/c I was hoping not to sleep train but the NCSS has not worked and we have to do something. Sad

Re: Moms who Ferbered,

  • We started with bed time first, and we did a sort of pseudo-ferber.

We would let her cry for 5 minutes then go in an pick her up for about 3 minutes, then put her down.

We never went more than about 7 minutes, and always picked her up - I know they don't recommend picking the baby up.

We also never ever let her scream. If she screamed we would rock her and put her down, and let her go maybe about 3 minutes. If she just had that whiny mellow, self-soothing kind of cry we wouldn't go in until about 7 minutes. So we never did the 15 minute, to 20 minute, and so on kind of intervals.

Took us about a day. Now she falls asleep on her own in her crib.

  • We also did not let it get to the screaming point without going in to soothe, however long or whatever it took. It took about 3 nights of needing to intervene and then the magic happened for 4 days of STTN. Last night he woke at 2 and we had to go in twice before he fell back asleep until 5 but we were consistent which I think is important. Good Luck!

  • We did bedtime and naps at the same time so there wasn't any confusion. It took us a couple weeks because he got sick in the middle of it. We also did an easy version of it... never let it go past about 15 minutes. But we never pick him up (except I still kept one night nursing for now, will cut it out before he's one hopefully). It's hard listening to LO cry but try to be consistent because otherwise it will take much longer to work.

    GL!

  • We had every intention of using Ferber - and did - sort of.  We did bedtime first, and then started her naps with the same method (when she does nap - she's not really a napper).  LO was initially STTN at 3 weeks old, but after bronchitis, she got "off" schedule.  She would CIO for only brief periods of time and I think the third night was the longest (about 20 minutes).  It worked like a charm and she was going right out within the first few days.  It gave us our sanity back!  FWIW, I'm not sure I could have allowed LO to CIO for too long, but it worked so well so quick, we didn't have a problem.
