I went to register yesterday and there are so many toys for babies! Any advice on what to get? I mean, how many different animal shaped rattles does a infant need?
we've been using our activity mat since we brought ds home at 5 days old. Also we got a lot of use out of the swing and bouncer. He's just now starting to like teethers and rattles and his exersaucer and jumperoo
I wouldn't register for those types of toys, you'll get them as gifts without needing to register for them. I have a million stuffed animals, rattles, toys to hang on the carseat, etc. I didn't register for any of it.
I'd stick to playmat, swing, etc. for your registry. Same concept as clothes, you get a million without asking for them.

I agree with PPs - don't register for small toys - people will buy them anyway. We did register for the activity mat, and a tummy time toy. We bought a few things once we realized what DD really liked...

Re: How many toys does a baby need?
1 or 2 rattles/chew toys (C's faves were the Haba grippy/rattle ones)
the toy bar for the infant seat seems popular
activity mat is nice a few months in, for a few months
