Lexapro withdrawl symptoms

Anyone experience withdrawls symptoms when going off Lexapro?  I have been on it for about 2 months and felt great, so decided a little over a week ago to stop taking it.  The past few days, I have had these "jolts" in my face - not sure how to explain it - but it's like a wave of tingling or pressure that lasts only a few seconds and is dizzying.  They seem to increase as the day goes on.  Also feel a bit nauseas.   Anyone experience anything like this when stopping Lex?

Re: Lexapro withdrawl symptoms

  • I was just on it for a week, and today I havent taken it because the prescription still needs to be filled and I am overwelmed with anxiety. I feel lightheaded and dizzy and I dont know what to do because I do not have a ride to the store. So its not juist when you stop but when you miss it as well.

  • I stopped Lexapro cold turkey after about two months and I didn't experience anything like what you are describing. I had some headaches/dizziness and nausea but nothing overwhelming....I would check in with your doctor.
  • You should never stop SSRI's cold turkey!! You should wean off under a doctors guidance very, very slowly. I weaned over 2 months and still experienced some of these side effects. They are relatively common from what I understand but you should contact a doctor to be sure.

Also, just because the meds have kicked in a you are feeling a little better doesn't mean you should go off them. Most patients need to stay on for at least 6 months. You are much more likely to have rebound depressive episodes if you stop treatment so quickly.

  • Omg yes and I did wean off according to my doctors instructions. They are called brain zaps and can get horrible. Talk to your doc ASAP. I ended up back on lexapro on a lower dose.

  • I was on Lexapro a few years ago and stopped taking it cold turkey right before a vacation.  I felt fine for a day or two and then the withdrawal symptoms started.  It was one of the most horrible things I've experienced.  I felt like if I turned my head it took an extra minute for my brain to catch up, I was dizzy, anxious, just all out of sorts.  Fortunately I had a refill of the Rx left and called the pharmacist who informed me what to do in terms of weening myself off.  As soon as I popped another pill I felt fine which scared me even more to think my body was addicted to that.  Anyway, you definitely need to talk to your doc about weening yourself off.  It's different for everyone...it may take a few weeks or maybe a few months.  Good luck!
