Helium Baloons: Fill Day of Party or Check Off To-Do List Early?

I have a bunch of latex & Mylar balloons to fill. I'd love to get it out of the way today. They'll still look nice & perky tomorrow, right? (it's 70 degrees & rainy if that affects how fast they wilt). ETA: shiznit. Giant (grocery store) charges $4 to fill Mylar & $1.09 to fill latex!!! Are we in a helium recession?

  • I would get them filled that day if you are doing latex and mylar balloons.  If you were just filling mylar balloons then you should be ok filling them early.  However, latex never last that long.  We bought a bunch of balloons for DD's first birthday and the latex ones were droopy the next day.

  • we bought our own balloons for DS's bday party today. I wasnt going to pay a $1 a balloon for someone else to fill it up so I went and bought a $20 helium tank at target and will be blowing up my own balloons today. It saves money

  • If you have a Party City by you, go there.  I used to work there and they don't charge anywhere near as much to fill balloons.  Also, unless the place has the serum to shoot into the latex balloons that make them last longer, regular latex balloons will only last about 8-10 hours full and nice looking.  Mylars will last days, even a couple weeks as long as it properly seals and there are no holes.

  • Regular Latex balloons only last about 4-6 hours with helium so you need to do that the day of the party and fairly close to last. Mylar balloons officially last 2-3 weeks. In fact we have some stuck at the top of our two-story entryway that were from DD#2's party in mid february.
  • I agree, do it tomorrow.  Our Wal-Mart, sells do it yourself helium kids for 19 dollars. We always do those.

  • I bought some at the party store late the night before... by the am they were deflated! I was so mad! I called the store and they told me they were only good for a few hours.

Uh how about when I bought them I asked the girl, they'll be okay for a party tomorrow afternoon right?

    She said, ya no problem...

So then FIL ran to the $ store and got more for us. This time they were mylar and lasted for weeks.

  • If you do them the day before they will not make it to the day of. I filled 100 balloons the morning of Matthew's party. By the end of the afternoon the balloons were no longer floating in the air. They were looking droopy.

  • Helium is getting more and more expensive because it is one of the elements that is non-renewing. When we use helium and release it into the atmosphere it is gone (breaks up and bonds with other elements). So as the years go by helium will continue to increase in price as it becomes more and more scarce.
Just an interesting helium fact! Smile

  • I agree!  Our latex balloons died in 8 hrs.....we still have one rogue mylar balloon on the ceiling and it has been 6 weeks since his party!  (our ceilings are 20 ft, so Im waiting it out).  Party City does have a thing called "high float" which they squirt inside the balloons (for an extra charge) and they will float for days, if not weeks!

This. Part of my dad's company does helium and balloon sales. Mylar would be fine but latex will probably deflate.

We have a Walmart supercenter by our house and they charge less than that so I'd try there.
