Question about my used breast pump

I have a medela PISA that I used for a year after Justin was born and I was working.  I kept it, thinking I would need it when I went back to work after Tyler came along, but that never happened.

DH and I are cleaning out our basement (oh joy), and I don't know what to do with the pump.  Is there any way to recycle these things, or do I just throw it away?  I feel so bad doing that, but I guess it's not one of those things that you should share, or that anyone would be interested in anyway.

Re: Question about my used breast pump

  • Do you have any close friends or family that would be interested in it? If not, I would ebay or craigslist it. Even though it's not recommended to use for more than one person, a LOT of people do it. And I've heard of lots of people paying for a used PISA!

Or maybe check with donating it... I don't know if anyone woud accept it or not.

  • If you don't have a friend/family member that will use it & don't want to sell it I would at the very least either free cycle or craigslist give it away vs. throwing it out. :)

    Happy Birthday Again!!

  • I am going to be using a used pump. I just ordered replacement parts from amazon and spent about $35.00 and the pump is as good as new. I wouldn't throw it out. Those suckers can get expensive and it's cheap to make them newly hygenic.
  • If you are just going to get rid of it, I will take it.  I need to get one and I can probably get the part, like Fozzy did.

  • I think you could very easily sell this for $100 on craigslist.  Why would you throw it away?

Because the PISA is an open system pump, and it's not recommended that they be shared. Even if you buy new tubing etc., it's still possible that disease could be spread via the motor. (Not that srkate has any diseases that I know of Stick out tongue)

I'm done with my pump now and I won't sell it, particularly since it's been through two kids.  I just don't feel right about it.

I disagree with this.  You can't sterilize the pump itself, so it's possible that you could contaminate your milk/yourself if a previous user had thrush, not to mention germs that are much worse.  I just wouldn't do it.

I don't know what I will do with my pump after I'm done with it for good, but I won't sell it.

  • I would (and did) use a close friend's previously used PISA, prior to buying my own; but, to qualify this, I'm the kind of person who would use my friend's toothbrush or deodorant. Wink

I wouldn't buy one from a stranger, but I definitely plan on passing my PISA along to a close friend/family member. To each their own (as long as you are educated about the possibility of contamination, disease, etc.).
