Travel Advice

My FIL is having some surgery next week and has asked if DH and I would come down and watch DH's younger brother and sister while he is having the surgery. They don't have anyone else that can watch them. My MIL can do it if we can't, but that would make things a little difficult.

The problem is that they live 7.5 hours away. I talked to the pediatrician today and he said that there is no problem if we wanted to go. I wanted to check with him just in case. My mom (who lives the same place as the IL's) doesn't think we should come. She doesn't think that it is fair to do that to DS. She said that she would love to see us, but thinks DS is too young. She keeps saying that she doesn't think it is fair of the IL's to ask this of us. DH would watch his brother and sister. I have made it clear that DS is my top priority.

Would any of you travel that far with a LO so young? I grew up where we are going and there is a really good children's hospital there in case something does happen.

Re: Travel Advice

  • When DS was 3 weeks old (he's 9 yrs now) I moved about 8 hours away from where we were living.  He was easy as pie...slept in the car, stopped every couple of hours for diapers/food.  It wasn't a big deal, but you have to do what makes you comfortable.

If you go, just give yourselves LOTS of time so that you won't feel stressed stopping to take care of the baby.  GL!

  • We're flying home to Atlanta from Guatemala next week with LO- she'll be 6 weeks which I know is older than your LO but I still think it's okay.  Like PP said, give yourself lots of time and do what keeps everyone happy :)  Good luck!

  • First of all, your baby is ADORABLE in your siggy pic!! I LOVE IT!! :-)

Next week your LO wil be three weeks ... will you be healed enough and feel okay traveling at three weeks? You have to take that into consideration too. I'm at three weeks and I feel okay but still sore.

I would take LO to a family member's house at 3 weeks- with family, you can make sure they are hand washing, etc. How old are DH's siblings? If they are on the older side, the might even be helpful!! DH's younger brother is in high school and lives with us, and he is helpful with picking up take out or holding the baby while I go to the bathroom/switch laundry/ make a bottle.

It's up to your mommy intuition, but if it were me, I would do it as long as I felt like I could still heal and would have the privacy I needed to BF/pump.
