FFFC: night edition

I had one earlier but I can't remember what it was! So for now: I'm super judgy of my pet-owning neighbors and lately I'm almost looking for a reason to call on them because I know they're bad owners. Take, for instance, the Great Dane/Lab mix who is outside on a short chain for most of the day, barking his huge head off. He's cute and it's obviously not his fault, but seriously...the dang dog woke me up at 2 a.m. once! Their house is also way too tiny to have him AND their fat-ass lab that I rarely see. There's no way that they're being cared for as well as they should be (definitely no exercise). Also, the lady with tons of cats that keep breeding. Also, the guy with the yellow lab that was tied to the truck yesterday morning when I walked...then in the afternoon....and also tonight. I know he goes inside and his line wasn't super short, but still. Ugh. It sounds like we live in Hicksville! Sorry this turned into a vent, but there it is. I'm searching out a reason to get many of my neighbors visited by the animal police.

I have a pet related FFFC.  I wish I never listened to people who told me to put T's (my dog) crate in our bedroom.  I love him but I'm done with sleeping next to him.  He wakes me up all night scratching himself and whining in his sleep.  But if we leave him downstairs he thinks he's being punished not being allowed to come up with me.

    I'm stuck with him.  Stinker.

  • In tx tying a dog out for more than an hour is illegal. Good luck getting cops to enforce it though. Poor babies.

Bailey, I hear ya! What's with these effin hormones?! Kcl, I'm so glad we keep our dog and cat out of our room most nights! My fianc? doesn't come home on Fridays so I let them in to keep me feeling safer, but GAWD sometimes I just need to kick them out ;) I'm curious though, why were you told to keep the crate in your bedroom? Ugh sorry about the mashup here.

seriously? I wish it was illegal here. I'll also confess: I don't think that people who keep their animals outside most of the time should have pets.

We got him when he was a puppy and I read/heard it was good to keep them close to the family not only for bonding but for potty training.  Go figure he slept through the night from the first night we got him.  Even if he didn't care I'd feel like the wicked witch moving his crate downstairs now.  I'd imaging him crying into his pillow wondering where his mommy is.  I'm a loser.

  • Meh some dogs prefer to be outside.  But yea it is shocking that there is a law here.  Teechnically there are no animal cruelty laws because the state is reluctant to define cruelty because of the cattle industry.  Bestiality is legal here as long as you don't physically hurt the animal.

I only know this because bestiality was my assigned topic in my human sexuality class a few years back. lol

  • My neighbors leave their dogs outside all the time and they bark at everything that walks by - including us on our last walk of the night.  They have been bringing them out front on leashes lately... tonight they attacked my friends' dog as we were chatting outside.  I like my neighbors, but I want to call animal control as those dogs are menaces!  One of them attacked our greyhound last year and left scratches on his belly.

My FFFC: My birthday is Monday but I work all day.  DH had talked about taking me out for dinner this weekend, but now he is going to play poker tomorrow night.  I'm not going to say anything and just see if he remembers or if he blows it.

Our dog is so dumb, he cracks me up.  He thinks its a huge treat to go in his crate so during the day he will LITERALLY tip toe up the stairs to go lay down thinking he's getting away with something.  It's a riot.

He goes to daycare a couple days a week and the people there say if they can't find him they go look in the crates and he's curled up in one of them.  He's lazy apparently

That's so cute! I broke down the crate and took it to the basement a few weeks ago because our dog never used it. The cat would occasionally sleep in there, but even he hasn't touched it in a while! They take over our couches....won't even sleep on the dog bed, hence the blanket by our door!

  • My FFFC: I think most people put their children into a day care situation without accepting the fact that while their child may be the their entire world, in most day care situations, the child is one of many.  I think this results in a lot of people getting butthurt because things aren't "the way I'd do it".

Sorry friend, while you may have 45 minutes to exclusively devote to Jr: spritzing the air with lavender pillow mist, crank the thermostat to 72.5 degrees, give him deep tissue baby massage and cue up Mozart, when you send them off to day care, the dcp has 7 other babies, you can't be everything for everyone.  I know not everyone can be a sahm (I can't) but when you put them in a group DC situation, you have to make some compromises (or pay out of the nose for more individual care).

  • Now I'm wondering if our new neighbors think we're bad pet owners. Our new house doesn't have a fence yet, so we have been tying them out back a couple times a day. But the thing is, they LOVE to be outside. Once we picked the older one up from my cousin who was watching him, and her FIL told us (in his slow Hank Hill accent), "That dog just wants to be outside." We say that every time we look out and see him just chillin' in the grass. I am not a fan of dogs living on chains, but bigass golden retrievers need some fresh air every day. They get plenty of walks and love!

More often, though, I find myself preemptively defending their ginormousness in my head. Seriously, we ended up with the world's largest goldens.

Exactly. They are animals, there is nothing wrong with them being outside as long as it's not ridiculously hot or cold and they have access to their water and food.

I think people who start threads solely to harass others for their political or religious beliefs are bored, cruel, and insecure.  I don't understand why you need the validation for your own beliefs, KWIM?  Don't be a b!tch just because you can be.  If you genuinely want to understand why other people feel the way they do, I'm assuming you're open to changing your mind - so approach it with an open mind and gentle manner.  If not, why the fvck do you want to talk about it so bad?  Just to make other people feel like sh!t?  Great, go you.  Glad you feel so high and mighty.

My FFFC is that I let DS watch Animal Planet: Unlikely Animal Friends at 6PM after 30 minutes of napping since 8AM.  He wouldn't calm down any other way.  I am SO ANAL about TV watching.

I was thinking of a UO along the same lines today. It irritates me to no end when people say "It's not all puppies and rainbows here!" Like, why be so proud to be a drama llama? Is it really so bad not to come to TB looking to flame and argue? Thanks, but I have enough stress in my life without getting into arguments with Bumpies.

It's through Children's of DC. P's allergist told me about it. The baby has to be younger than 3 months at the start of the study though. You could call anyway and see if they would let you do it? You get 150 bucks to target (that's lots of baby legs)

No thanks needed! I found it really interesting! They are comparing the stress levels in Moms and Babies who stay at home, vs Mom's who work and babies who go to day care. Apparently more babies die of SIDS who go to daycare, so they are trying to figure out why.

They test mine and her pee for different hormones that tell them how stressed we were on any given day. I also have a sensor for P's movements, and light, sound, and temperature of the room where she is sleeping. It's really cool, but it's gotten to be some what of a PITA to keep track of all the info.

The statistics (and I don't have them right in front of me) we had in our staff meeting last month were insane.  If I remember correctly, more SIDS death occurred out of parental observation (dcp or with other family).  Out of those SIDS deaths, most of them occurred during the first week.  Out of those deaths, most of them occurred on the first day of daycare.  Like I said, I don't remember the exact #'s.  Most of the training was going on the "back to sleep" campaign and the SIDS deaths.

They seemed to think that the correlation was between DCP's placing a baby that normally slept on it's back (at home) on it's stomach (at daycare).

  • My other FFFC. I get so upset when I see news reports of obvious negligent parenting and the poor baby's death is said to be the result of SIDS. SIDS is not "the parents were getting high and let the baby sleep with it's bottle in the crib" it's more of an unexplained death. I've seen so many awful news reports like this and it breaks my heart that these parents aren't charged or have repercussions when it's obvious they were liable.

ITA. I think that SIDS is used a lot of times when really it's "parent error"

I let P sleep with a stuffed animal during the day, and my mom is always like "Isn't that a SIDS risk?" I have to explain to her, that no, while it is a suffocation risk, it is not a SIDS risk. Like you said, SIDS is more like, babies who just stop breathing for no apparent reason.

ETA: P and I live in a studio apartment in my mom's basement, so when she is sleeping with said stuffed animal, I can see her at all times.

  • Thanks Bredin's Wife! I thought I would get flamed hard core for it but I'm glad others see it. That's why I never understood bumpers + SIDS. I guess it can hinder airflow but come on, it's much more of a suffocation risk than anything else.

  • H and I had this discussion before L was born.  Where do you draw the line with SIDS prevention?  We don't have crib bumpers because of SIDS, but more b/c I think they're stupid looking.  We don't have stuffed animals in the crib because of SIDS, it's more because he's not really attached to any specific lovey and I want to keep it that way as long as possible (the amount of 4 year old lovey-related meltdowns I see every year in my class is insane).  He doesn't have a blanket in his crib because he's a human furnace and sweats any time he's covered too much.

They can say "we think it might come from xyz"  and people spend all of their time, money and energy preventing x,y,z and still the baby dies.  You do what you can, ykwim?

He's the single greatest thing I've done in my life and reminds me daily of how fun (and funny) life can be.  He's turned out pretty swell for having such a heartless and evil mother.
  • My BIL's dog bit his baby in the face and today his stupid a$$ wife and him both posted how much they missed the dog... idiots.

my FFFC is that I side eye anyone whos parenting style is EXTREME anything too much in one direction is bad IMO. Like my niece who isnt allowed to finish the litlte mermaid because its "scary" well we live in one of the worst towns in america whats she going to do when she sees some one getting beat up at school? have a nervous breakdown? Oh my other SIL who ony lets her kids listen to praise and worship music... but sends them to public school... hows that going to go down? Idiocy at its finest there

  • All this SIDS talk has spurred my FFFC:  For the first week or two of DS' life, I was concerned that his clothes and swaddle were too close to his face at night.  Sometimes I would reswaddle him just to get it as far down as possible while still keeping him tightly bundled.  I blame it on hormones and lack of sleep.
