My baby won't sleep on a flat surface

My baby won't sleep on a flat surface.  He prefers to sleep in a chair or swing.  Any suggestion?  Anyone use the nap nanny?

  • My chest is the only place she will sleep.  I have no problems with that.  What is wrong with letting your baby sleep where they can?

  • Is it bad if he only sleeps in the chair and/or swing?  Not sure if I'm setting myself up for down the road when he no longer fits in the swing and/or chair.

I'm in the same boat!  I can get him to sleep in his cosleeper at night, but during the day he will only sleep in the baby bjorn.  I don't get it!!

  • My LO won't sleep flat on her back. If I set a rolled blanked under one of her shoulders she's perfect, and when I put her in the cradle I put her off center so she is leaning to one side. That seems to help her immensely. She won't sleep flat on her back in the pack'n'play though. Strange.

  • The co sleeper is our issue too.  I put either his chair or carseat in the co sleeper and he'll sleep there.  UGH!  I'm thinking about getting the nap nanny.  do you know it or anyone whose uses it?  Likes dislikes?

I have the nap nanny.  DD napped in it pretty well when she was under 1 month old, since then, she prefers stuff that moves (swing, RnP, the stroller, in the Bjorn).  Honestly, the nap nanny is ridiculously expensive for a piece of foam.  I borrowed mine from a neighbor, otherwise I wouldn't have it.

There's nothing wrong with letting your baby sleep in a swing or carseat.  He won't do it forever.  And if it's working, don't change things.  Once it stops working, look for alternatives.

  • That sounds totally normal and not problematic. The inside of your uterus was warm and springy and curvy. Baby will eventually grow out of this as he gets more acclimated to the outside world. Every baby is different, but if my timeline helps you: my guy got over this at nighttime after a few weeks. For naptime, it took about 10 weeks.

  • DS will only sleep in the nap nanny & sometimes the RnP.  My chest is his place of choice but I worry having him there overnight when I'm asleep, too.

  • Glad to hear we aren't alone in this.  The RnP has been a god-send for us.  The one place (besides my chest) that DD will sleep for longer than 20 minutes or so. Best $50 I ever spent. We went from awful nights of no sleep to 3-4 hours at a time!  I'm just worried about when she outgrows it and needs to be in the crib.  Oh well, we'll deal with that when we get to it.

    Good luck to you.

  • I put a folded blanket under the mattress of ds' basinet so that he has a little incline, he slept great in it last night. Longest stretch of sleep at once at night.
