So, I need advice!

I can't sleep on my side..... I tried and just wake up on my back and my nights are MISERABLE either way. A couple days ago I started sleeping sitting up. Not fully upright, but reclined halfway between sitting and laying down. Of course I am on my back in this position..... Is this okay? If not, do you have ANY suggestions? My stomach and back hurt if I am not sitting up partially now!

ETA: I also have tried a body pillow.. Doesn't help!

  • I think back and tummy are fine till they start to hurt..And trust me, laying on your back will eventually hurt!

So I say just enjoy it while you can you will eventually kind of be forced to sleep on your side..just invest in some good pillows! They say laying on your back puts pressure on major vessels but your body will let you know before any damage is done..

  • I am doing the same exact thing. And, I think it is because of the heartburn from still having m/s. I am sorry this really isn't advice- but I figured it was ok until we are uncomfortable.

Does sitting up to sleep still affect those blood vessels?

  • I think for now you are ok but I remember my Dr telling me not to sleep on my back after a certain point because everything will squish down towards your backside and could possibly harm organs and/or baby.  Just ask you Dr next time you go in!

  • My midwife told me back is safe up until about 20 weeks, when the baby weighs more.

Thats a really good question and really I dont know..Dr. google says!:

"However, generally pregnant women need to lay quite flat on their back before the vena cava becomes compressed. Usually by lying on your right or left side, sitting in an upright position, or even in a semi-upright position will avoid vena-caval compression. "

Looks like being propped you're in the clear..I'd still ask your OB just to be sure.

  • Thanks ladies! This is all excellent info and makes me a lot better!

  • My midwife said you can sleep however you want (back, stomach, whatever) for as long as you want if you are comfortable. Your baby is well protected and your body will tell you if you need to change positions.

  • I am in the exact same boat!! It is so frustrating because I always wake up on my back, and I immediately turn to my side because it makes me paranoid!=) I have tried sleeping with a body pillow, and I am slowly getting adjusted to it, but I would prefer to sleep on my back!

It doesn't help either because I feel like I never go into a deep sleep anymore, which means I am always having CRAZY dreams!!
