Baby lifts her legs when she sleeps?

My daughter sleeps swaddled in her RNP at night. She thrashes a little here and there but manages to sleep from 8-5ish.

I've started to try to make the transition to her crib for naps. I swaddle her and she can fall asleep in her crib but she has a hard time staying asleep. After 30-45 minutes she starts lifting her legs and flopping them up and down. I'm not even sure she's awake when she does it but she doesn't stay asleep much longer after she starts doing it.

Does anyone else's baby do this? Could it be a swaddling issue? A laying flat issue? She sleeps flat and swaddled at dc and stays asleep for hours!  I want to start to transition her into her crib full time but I'm not sure where to start.

  • Yes, DS does this. I don't think it's really an "issue", it's just a part of their development.

  • my baby also likes to sleep with her legs in the air.  It's that or looking like a contortionist, about to roll from back to belly.  Neither look very comfortable, but I think it's just a phase type thing.

  • When C did that, I took a light blanket and put it across his legs, tucking it in either side of the crib mattress to hold him down. Worked like a charm.

(I can't take credit for the idea, but I forget who on here suggested that to me!)

Honor wriggles herself until she's free of that.  Nothing will hold those legs down!  She even did it in her woombie, which is one of the reasons we thought she might be ready to lose the swaddle.

  • LO does that with his arms.  I also tuck in his blanket to hold them down but he seems to always wriggle them free.  He looks like a little zombie sleeping with his arms sticking up.

  • haha V does this all the time at night with her sleepsack on.  I'm always afraid she's going to kick the camera for the monitor
  • griffin will lift both legs up at the same time and drop them with a big thud.  first time he did that it was the middle of the night and i was alone.  i was so scared there was a ghost trying to take griffin away lol
  • Yep.  DD has been doing this too, as of late.  I think movement when they're sleeping is an important part of their development.  That's why it's recommended to stop swaddling around 3-4 mos.

This. I don't think it wakes DS up if he's sleeping soundly, but sometimes, IMO, it is a cue that he's beginning to drift out of deep sleep and into a more active sleep state, so sometimes it does precede waking.

  • My DS has done this for a while... and he normally does this when he has gas... lol.  My child already knows how to lift his legs and fart.  great.
