baby has watery/gunky/crusty eye???

Is anyone else having this issue?  I read online that it is due to the tear ducts not being  totally formed... also that breast milk in the eye helps, I have tried it a few times... I hate to see my babies eye all yucky- if this has happened to your baby, how long did it last- we have a dr.s appt. soon, I hope it goes away before that.

  • Just keep cleaning it and putting breast milk on it.  It should go away soon.  LO had it for about a week and then it cleared up.

  • Take a warm wash cloth and do compressions against the eye and massage the inner corner of the eye.  It happens a lot!

This is what our pedi told us to do, and it's worked well for DS's clogged tear duct.

  • Agreed with everyone above.  My dd had it too.  We called the ped and he prescribed an eye ointment to kill the infection (the gunky stuff).  It worked in about 36-48 hours... now she's just watery...

  • Hunter has had this since we got home from the hospital (Jenna had it also when she was tiny, but it cleared up quicker).  We use a warm washcloth to get the gunk out.  I think it has a lot to do with all the cotton.  I know that some of his blankets put little fuzzies all over my clothes... and when I get the goo from his eye sometimes there is a fuzzie in it... dunno, but hope it clears up soon!! Haven't tried the BM before I may do some research on that!!
  • Ben has had this from day one. It comes and goes. Our pedi said not to worry unless the whites of his eyes change color (that would indicate infection).

Clogged tear ducts can take up to a year to open before it is a concern.

  • just today i asked the dr. about this.  she said to massage/push the area moving up along the nose until you get to the inner eye, then massage from the inner eye out to the outer eye.  up and out.  my LO has this too, you feel so bad for them!
