Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Letting baby sleep on her side all night?

When we put our little girl into her crib at night, we put her on her side with a pillow behind her. She'll fall asleep this way. Before we go to bed, we'll go in and remove the pillow and put her on her back. Sometimes, she wakes up when we do this. Her back isn't her favorite position.  She just seems to prefer to sleep on her side and sleeps much better this way. Does anyone leave their LO on their sides all night?

Re: Letting baby sleep on her side all night?

  • My LO rolls to his side periodically throughout the night. Usually when he falls into a deep sleep, he rolls off his side and onto his back on his own. I would never move him from his side if he slept that way all night.

This is what my LO does. I let her sleep like that.

  • My son is a tummy sleeper.  I put him in on his back and he is on his tummy in seconds (I watch on the monitor).  I let him do it.  Everything I have read says that once they do it on their own there isn't much you can do.

I would NEVER EVER put a pillow in a 3-6 month old's crib though.  You never know when she might decide to shift on her own and end up with her face in the pillow.  They become mobile in their cribs pretty quickly.

  • DS slept on his side with wedges around him.  He had reflux and so spit up a lot.  Letting him sleep on his side helped ease our minds.

  • DS rolls onto his side a lot of times. It doesn't bother me and I leave him alone.
  • Mine hates sleeping on her back. Now that she can roll onto her belly, there's no stopping her.

All of this. DS sleeps on his tummy, and it doesn't bother me. Just as side sleeping wouldn't bother me. But a pillow is not a great idea, IMO.

  • I put DS on his back. He almost always rolls to his side to sleep. Sometimes he goes all the way over to his belly. I leave him.

I would never put a pillow in there even if I was periodically check on her.  It's dangerous and it's not worth the suffocation risk.

  • At four months, my boys were rolling to their bellys, so they actually slept on their bellys bc they preferred it.  Prior to that, we would always put them on their sides, and rotate the side to help prevent flat head.

  • We've been putting DS on his side to sleep because he has a cold and if we put him down on his back (even though his crib is elevated on one end) he has terrible coughing fits that wake him up. :(

  • I wouldn't put a pillow in behind her. We always put DD down on her back but she's gone onto her side since about a month old. I leave her that way.
