We have a new suburban and we are obsessed with it. Yes, it is expensiveto fill...but Iam a SAHM so iam not driving it a lot everyday. It has tons of room and we feel insanely safe in it. And even though it is a large SUV...it feels like you are driving a sedan. I don't think we will ever shy away from it.
If your dogs will be in the car with your a lot (i.e. you like to travel) I'd suggest a minivan. I know everyone hates them, but with two kids (and all the stuff that comes with them, even the biggest SUV will be more than a tight fit for all "6" of you. They are also cheaper and more fuel efficient.
I have a Tahoe and I love it! Yes it is expensive to fill but like PP said Im a SAHM so I dont drive a ton. I love that the back seat go in and out and then it fits my big stroller and I can change the kids in the back. Super comfy even for my tall husband.
I have the honda pilot and its big enough and fuel efficient.
BUT, I totally agree with the MINI van comment. The 3rd row is very hard to access with 2 carseats so its almost pointless.
AND, when you have your hands full, you need to life every child into their seat. My 3 yr old daughter can semi climb up but I still have to nudge her up there. When we use my brother's mini van, also the honda, she can jump in with no problem.
my suggestion though is to rent the car you are considering getting for at least a day/weekend preferred. Try it out and see that you like how it drives and how the car seats fit. Yes, it will not be cheap but at least you know that it will be the right vehicle for you.
A minivan with power doors and a power lift gate would be your best friend. If you really don't want to go the van route, I highly recommend looking at the Buick Enclave. This is what we just purchased as our "forever" vehicle. I don't have 2u2 yet, but we're tryin'!
Pro's: - it's built on a car platform (not a truck) so it gets the same fuel economy as a Toyota Sienna, Honda Odyssey or Dodge Grand Caravan - looks like a stylish suv - luxe interior - same seating configuration as a van (2nd row can have two captain's chairs or a bench) -- the second row also slide forward and flush against the front row instead of the traditional tipping forward style (not so safe for little guys) - power lift gate, roof rack, heated seats, traction control or awd, etc (all the gadgets you could want)
Con's: - no sliding doors - less cargo capacity with the 3rd row up than a van because the floor doesn't sink down
I'll love you forever,
I'll like you for always,
As long as I'm living my baby you'll be.

I'll second the Buick Enclave--that's what we should have bought instead of my Murano. We loved it when we test drove it...but I thought it was too big, what was I thinking?
We have a Honda Pilot and love it. It is big enough for our 2 kids and our boxer.

Re: NEW SUV
it might be longer than a minivan, but capacity wise, it's not... Height, storage, and trunk space are all bigger with a van.
