Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Mixed solids question

DD is going to be 8 months old. I've seen the advice on the wholesome baby website, but I'd like to know what method you use to introduce your child to jarred foods that have lots of different ingredients.

For instance, I feed DD some Sprout foods. I would love to try some of the newer ones like a minestrone soup one.  There are some ingredients she's had before and others she hasn't.  Is it necessary for me to try to separate each ingredient and have her try it for 3 days before letting her have the Sprout soup?

What are you all doing?

Re: Mixed solids question

  • I understand that you should give them one ingredient at a time to be sure there aren't any reactions.  You might not be able to tell what causes the reaction if you have multiple ingredients.

I was planning on following those guidelines but DH took it upon himself to feed DD mixed veggies, bananas, sweet potatoes and corn all within 2-3 days... so I was irritated but luckily for his balls DD hasn't shown any kind of bad reaction to any of it so far.

  • We'll only give her one of the mixed food ones if there's only one ingredient in it she hasn't had before.  I make most of her food but we do jarred foods on occasion too.

  • I'm still doing separate first before I give them mixed together. I will, for instance, give him a banana-pumpkin mix since I know he's OK with bananas but don't know about pumpkin.

  • There is just SO much variety in some of those Sprout ones.  I have trouble finding/preparing the majority of the ingredients by themselves.  I try my best to give her all organic food.  Most of it I make myself.

    Thanks for the feed back!

  • I have thrown caution to the wind with some of the more advanced foods and let DS try them.  Chances are he has had a few of the ingredients already so if he reacted and we had to back track and individually test ingredients it wouldn't be that hard.  He hasn't had any food reactions so far.  He likes the Lentil Bolognese Sprout pouches and those have tomatoes.   His puffs have wheat in them and he has tried toasted bread so I guess we have cleared the wheat hurdle too.

  • I feed my daughter single stuff first. So her first solid actual food was carrots, then peas. I found a garden variety that was carrots, peas and spinich. Since she had already eaten lots of pea's and carrots I thought first I would know which ingredient if applicable she would be allergic too, and also it would be a good way to introduce a food that she might havea hard time wanting to eat. But in your case I wouldnt worry too much, there probably isnt TOO much extra that your LO would get. I think you should be fine

  • My pedi said it was ok so long as DD had at least 1 of the two or three items.  I have not considered any foods that have more than three yet - so not sure how that would play out.

I try to stick to one ingredient at a time, but I admit I'm getting more relaxed as W has had so many different foods already with no reaction. I tend to be less cautious when it's a similar food - for example he's had squash so I wasn't too worried about pumpkin. When it's a new food group, like when we introduced yogurt, I was extra careful.
