Ok so DS is a little over 5 weeks. At night he sleeps about 3 hours, 4 at the most. I see all these moms talking about how their LO sleep 6-7 hours at night. What the heck am I doing wrong? I would LOVE some advice. I try to feed him 5 oz for his last feeding before bedtime to keep him full so he'll sleep a little longer, but he's still waking up usually at hour 3. Ugh! Please help : (
Re: How much does LO sleep at night?
Caleb will be 6 weeks old tomorrow and he sleeps 6-8 hours a night (he started this around 4 1/2 weeks). mrsbmw had suggested boosting my protein intake because it makes the milk richer so I started doing that. I also got a white noise machine (shuts off automatically after an hour though he usually falls asleep within 10 mins in the bassinet) and swaddle. Sticking to a routine also helps. We usually put him down between 10-11pm. Sometimes he'll wake up around midnight, but after I nurse him, he's down until 7ish.

Alice is 2 weeks tomorrow and she is a really good sleeper. She has always slept at least 3 hours at a time at night. I think it has a lot to do with the child. Last night she slept for a 5 hour stretch and then a 4 hour stretch. We start a bedtime routine at 9 with either a bath or some massage time. I feed her and put her down to sleep. We try to make sure that she has a good amount of wake time in the evenings so that she is more tired at bed time. When she does get up in the middle of the night we are up for about an hour, feeding, changing the diaper and rocking back to sleep.
My mom said that she did everything the same with my brother and I. He slept through the night right away and I didn't sleep through the night until I was 4 years old.
I'm interested in hearing what people say too. Ellis is just shy of 3 weeks and she is eating about 3oz each time. She was eating every 2 hours like clockwork during the day and then 3 hours at night for a little over a week. But for the past two days, she's been stretching out the day feedings and clustering the night ones. I've been wondering if she's having her 3 week growth spurt or if she's not getting enough at night because she keeps falling asleep at the boob. So, starting today I've decided to feed her from the bottle and pumping, just to make sure she's getting enough. We'll see how it works tonight. I hope since she stretched out her day feedings today and yesterday that she'll give me 4 hour stretches at night.
But, that's probably just foolish hoping. Oh these evil babies

My daughter is 5 weeks old tomorrow.. she goes 3-4 hours at a time between feedings (and during the daytime sleeps maybe 2 hours between feedings and is awake for an hour or two each time?).. at night I try to keep the room a little bit darker (I put a dimmer switch in), don't talk to her too much, and I put her in a nice tight swaddle. We found this movie called "The Happiest Baby" (www.thehappiestbaby.com) and they recommended swaddling with the arms down. We made the mistake of thinking "She really likes to have her hands out!" ..but kept waking herself up with her arms flailing around.. so starting 2 nights ago we swaddled her with arms down and she is going 4-5 hours at a time during the night.
Also- a white noise machine I would highly recommend. I have been sleeping with one for years and have found that it also really helps her stay asleep.
DD has been sleeping 6-8 hours a night since we got home from the hospital. She normally goes down about midnight and is up around 7 am. I don't think it has much to do with anything I do, I think she's just a good sleeper.
I eat a high protein diet to help my milk stay rich and filling for her. I also put her in a Halo SleepSack Swaddle for bed and let her cluster feed a little before bed. I don't know what else I do that might help, all babies are different and the sleeping will get better eventually.
It will get better, and once it does, it will get worse again at some point. Our best nights are definitely swaddled ones. Try the "escape proof swaddle" it uses two blankets and works like the Miracle Blanket to hold the arms in. We have done this the past two nights and they were amazing nights.
His fussy time has always been around 7-8ish, and before I was letting him stay downstairs with us until around midnight since he would nap from 8-10ish and then want to eat. Instead, I rocked him to sleep once he was super swaddled and he was completely out by 8:30pm and slept until 4:15 one night and 2:30 last night.
These are also the first two nights he has slept a long time not in our bed, so maybe the swaddle has nothing to do with it and he finally just got to his point of wanting to sleep longer at night.
Ours just started sleeping 5-6 hours a night (most nights...not all nights)...
MRSBMW09 suggested we use the halp sleep sack with swaddle (since our LO always gets out of his swaddle no matter what we used...and I had assumed that we should just not swaddle his arms and I was wrong!)....that sleepsack and swaddle has saved us!
