It was mentioned in the FFFC post but didn't really take off as a conversation with so much more flammable stuff going on (making fun of smiling babies anyone?).
I am an uber-health nut. I love organic food, buying local, eating weird whole grains like quinoa and millet, growing my own herbs, not eating processed foods often (except Reese's PB eggs lol), and cooking from scratch. Eating at chain restaurants usually grosses me out.
That's just background so you know where I'm coming from. My point is, I don't really give a rat's tushy about HFCS. I think if you're eating enough of ANY type of refined sugar for you to have to worry about it, you're probably eating too much of it. If I have a few treats here and there or drink a regular Coke or use some ketchup that has HFCS...so be it. I don't eat that much sugar and I figure sugar's sugar. It's bad in large amounts, ok in small amounts. Frankly, I think, as one poster said, that not taking or giving your kid one pill because it contains HFCS is ridiculous (not trying to call anyone out, that's just my personal opinion).
I know there's all kinds of research out there on both sides. WDYT?
Re: WDYT of HFCS? maybe flammable.
I think all those commercial about how HFCS is fine in moderation has gone to my brain.
How do you feel about MSG? It sure makes Doritos taste good.

We try our best to avoid it but we don't freak out about it either, kwim?
I wholeheartedly agree. I lead a very healthy, active lifestyle (as you know). I try my best to make the best choices for myself and family whenever possible, but I also understand that we all need to live life.
I wish to teach Logan moderation; I will not deny him anything, but will encourage him to make the healthy choice as often as possible.
Will he get a slice of birthday cake at parties? yes. Will he go to McDonald's every once in a while? probably.
I don't want him being forbidden from anything; because that's when he's going to rebel.
I grew up with all of these things in moderation, and I am healthy, not overweight and have no health issues. I also prefer making the healthy choice over the junk food.
Well, that turned into a total ramble. I should have just said: I agree with you, Hecky!
I prefer to stay away from it, though I don't make it a huge issue. If I can avoid it, I do. I'm not going to turn down a gummy bear though. As far as DS goes - he's not at a feeding stage where this is an issue just yet. As he gets older, I'll probably do the same, but maybe a bit more diligently.
ETA: I feel like this about sugar in general.
This.
Also, I encourage everyone to watch the documentary Food Inc. It does a great job of explaining why we have massive amounts of corn by-products.
ETA: Ooops, meant to quote Shana who said "everything in moderation."
The two men in my life. Oh, and I have a husband too...

Eh, I think the amount of hidden sugar in food is pretty high and HFCS is a big offender. But it also has been super hyped and is now a marketing trick. I would rather just get minimally processed food. I try to limit my artificial sweetners more. I really avoided them in pregnancy and I realized how out of whack my sense of sweetness had gotten. I would prefer to have "real" sugar and just be happy with less of it.
I agree that artificial sweeteners bother me more the HFCS. I will definitely not be going back to it after being off through pregnancy and nursing.
Hunt's ketchup is HFCS-free.
DANGIT! I just finished a bag of Cool Ranch. I had no idea they contained MSG. Oh, well. Nomnomnomnom.
The beef I have with HFCS is that it is in everything. Even in things you wouldn't think need sweetener (like breads). If you're not vigilant about reading labels, it's very easy to eat more sugar than you think you are.
Having said that, I do enjoy a regular Coke every now and again, but, like you Hecky, I normally eat very healthy things that don't have HFCS in them.
Its really not hard to avoid HFCS. Its just in condiments, cereals, crackers and soda. Each one of these things has many non-HFCS alternatives.
I've been trying to think of a way to explain the HFCS thing for a while and I think this is a pretty close explanation.
Fructose is poison. It poisons the body almost exactly like how alcohol does. The only real difference is that it does not effect the brain. Only your liver can process fructose, and fructose damages your liver. But, when you eat a whole fruit, like an apple, you are getting the fiber, carbs, etc. to help to process the fructose better.
Think of this issue being similar to cyanide. Most fruit seeds contain cyanide, and cyanide is a poison. If you are eating these seeds as they occur in nature, with the fruit, it would be nearly impossible to be harmed by it. But, if you removed all the seeds from every apple you ate for a few years, and then took all those seeds all at once and ate them, you'd die from cyanide poisoning.
Its the same with fructose. They extract all the fructose from the fruit and concentrate it. So think of High Fructose Corn Syrup as like High Cyanide Apple Seed Syrup. No, fructose will not kill you instantly, but you don't need to die to suffer from poison.
There is NO such thing as eating HFCS in moderation.
The really bad part is referring to it as sugar or thinking of it in that way. HFCS is not more a "corn sugar" than High Cyanide Apple Seed Syrup would be "apple sugar".
You just made yourself sound really ignorant. You hope it's linked to autism so people will care enough to avoid it??
