So we used up all the free disposable diapers that we got as gifts. I want to start using cloth diapers. Whenever the baby pees, do I need to change the diaper cover? I tried touching it and smelling - it seems clean but they are also water resistant. So is it bad if I just change the inserts? or do i change the whole thing? Thank you!

I rotate between a few covers, letting them air out inbetween. I even wipe each cover out with a wipe after use.
When I do my wash, I throw in all the covers I've been using just to make sure they get cleaned....even if they were just the pee ones.
We have 6 covers and they probably cycle through the wash in 3 days with all the poopies... but like other responses, we don't wash the wet ones.
I don't do anything to the cover unless it got poop on it. Then it goes right in the pail. Otherwise, he uses the same cover all day and then it goes in the pail.
He uses a different cover at night since I use my Flip's at night sized bigger since he gets extra layers for overnight.
